Henshaws, the charity that supports people with sight loss and other disabilities, has announced a change of leadership.

Sally Daniels will step down as chief executive in October, remaining with Henshaws until December to support the transition and lead a number of key projects before taking up a new role at a national charity.

Her place will be taken on an interim basis by Tom Harte, who is currently chief operating officer. Mr Harte, who will take up the post in October, is an established member of the Henshaws executive leadership team and will lead the charity while trustees search for a new permanent chief executive.

At the same time, Alistair How will step down as chair of trustees, but will remain as a trustee until December to support the transition. Pete Bulkley, currently vice chair, will take up the role of chair from October.

Henshaws has a college campus in Starbeck, which offers day and residential places for young people aged 16 to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities.

It also operates an arts and crafts centre in Knaresborough, which provides art workshops for adults with disabilities, and incorporates a café and garden centre.

The management changes come as the charity looks ahead to the next stage of its development.

Sally Daniels said it had been a privilege to lead Henshaws and work alongside so many committed colleagues, volunteers, trustees and supporters. She added:

I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and, most importantly, of the difference our teams make every day to the people we support.

I know Henshaws is in a strong position for the future and I am very pleased that Tom will be leading the organisation through this next period. He knows Henshaws, our services and our ambitions extremely well, and I have every confidence in him and the wider leadership team as they continue to take the charity forward.

Mr Harte said it was a privilege to have been asked to lead Henshaws. He added:

Sally and Alistair have both made an important contribution to Henshaws, and I am looking forward to working with Pete, our trustees, colleagues and partners to build on the progress we have made.

We have clear ambitions for the future and a strong platform from which to deliver them. My priority will be to provide continuity and leadership through this period, while continuing to improve and develop our services and ensuring that the people we support remain at the centre of every decision we make.

Mr How said:

I would like to thank Sally for her leadership and commitment to Henshaws and for the important contribution she has made to the charity. I am delighted that Tom has agreed to lead Henshaws as interim chief executive and that Pete will succeed me as chair.

Henshaws has strong foundations and significant opportunities ahead, and I am confident in the leadership of the organisation as it moves forward.
