Four women spent last night (October 30) in custody following a suspected theft from the M&S food hall on Leeds Road, Harrogate.

According to a North Yorkshire Police statement today, the force received a report that a “significant quantity” of goods had been stolen from the store at 3.36pm yesterday.

Some of the items recovered by police.

The statement said a member of staff who attempted to stop the women was assaulted.

    It added:

Officers were provided with details of a vehicle believed to be involved and carried out extensive searches across the area. The vehicle was eventually located travelling northbound on the A1, where roads policing unit officers intercepted it.

Inside the vehicle were four women, two of whom were wanted warrant.

The vehicle has been seized and officers recovered £1,672.49 worth of suspected stolen goods from various stores.

All four women were arrested and enquiries are today continuing.

PC Michelle Telford said shop theft “remains a key priority for North Yorkshire Police”, adding:

When incidents like this happen, we will respond immediately. I would urge retailers, staff and members of the public to always report crimes of this nature. If a shop theft is in progress, or there is any threat of violence or assault, please call 999 straight away. The information you provide can be crucial in helping us identify and locate suspects quickly.
