Morrisons Daily on Harrogate's King Edward's Drive.

A man is in police custody following a robbery in Bilton last night (Tuesday, September 15).

Just before 8pm, a man wearing a balaclava entered Morrisons Daily on King Edward’s Drive and demanded that the member of staff on duty opened the till, threatening to stab him if he did not comply.

The suspect then took cash from the till and left the store.

In a statement on social media, North Yorkshire Police said:

The staff member was understandably shaken by the incident but, thankfully, was not injured.

Officers swiftly deployed to the area, carrying out CCTV enquiries and circulating images of the suspect to our local team.

One of our Police Community Support Officers subsequently recognised a man from the footage.

A 51-year-old local man was arrested at his home address on suspicion of robbery around two hours after the incident. Further enquiries led him being further arrested for three additional counts of theft.

He remains in police custody for questioning as our investigation continues.

Police are urging anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has any information that could help the investigation, to get in touch.

They can contact North Yorkshire Police using the Tell Us About function on its website, choosing the 'An existing case or report' option.

They can also use the live chat function from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm.

Alternatively, they can call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
