Families with new babies can get free extra support in the event of an interruption to their gas, electricity or water supply, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) has said.
The Priority Services Register (PSR) is a free service that enables NGN to support customers who may need extra help if any of these vital services is disrupted.
Anyone expecting a baby can be added to the register temporarily free of charge, just by providing their due date. Once the baby is born, they can remain a PSR customer until their child turns five.
For eligible customers, support during a gas outage includes home welfare visits, help with alternative cooking and heating facilities where needed, and access to wider welfare support services, such as hot food and drinks.
Other people eligible to be added to the register include those with a disability or long-term health condition, those of a pensionable age, people with a visual or hearing impairment, those with communication needs, and anyone temporarily experiencing vulnerable circumstances.
Laura Ratcliffe, Northern Gas Networks’ head of social strategy, said:
Welcoming a baby is an exciting but busy time, and energy support may not be the first thing on a family’s mind. But if there’s ever an interruption to gas supplies in your area it’s important to be prepared today so you and your little one can be safer tomorrow.
By being on the Priority Services Register we can identify any households that may need extra advice, reassurance or practical support until our teams can safely reconnect their gas supply.
It’s free to join, and support can be temporary or longer term depending on your medical or personal circumstances. If you – or someone you know – is expecting a baby, has recently welcomed a new arrival, or already has children under five at home but is not registered, take action and sign up today so you don’t miss out on support if you ever need it in the future.
Northern Gas Network delivers gas to 2.9 million homes and buisnesses across the north of England.
