Crowds gathered in Knaresborough this afternoon (May 26) ahead of a visit by King Charles III.

The king attended several engagements in York this morning.

Rumours began to circulate that he was heading to Knaresborough and Harrogate this afternoon.

There was a heavy police presence around Knaresborough Castle and at Harrogate Ladies’ College, which is expecting a VIP visitor.

About 200 people had converged on the castle shortly after 1.30pm as excitement mounted.

The king finally arrived at about 2.15pm.

The castle is owned by the king as part of his Duchy of Lancaster estate. It was a royalist stronghold during the civil war but fell to Oliver Cromwell’s parliamentarian forces in 1644. It was largely destroyed four years later.

Harrogate Ladies College is being renamed Duchy College in September, when boys will also be admitted.

The school buildings are leased from the King's Duchy of Lancaster.
