Damage to Middleham Bridge.

A historic bridge near Masham could reopen by the end of next month as plans progress to make the historic structure safe after it was hit by a lorry.

The Grade II listed Middleham Bridge, which links Middleham and Leyburn, has been closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists since it was significantly damaged in a crash earlier this month.

North Yorkshire Council said concerns remain over the structural stability of one of the bridge’s decorative masonry arches.

The authority is now appointing a specialist contractor to carry out emergency works, including installing temporary scaffolding to support the damaged arch.

Subject to final arrangements, work is expected to start in the coming weeks.

The first phase will involve stabilising the structure and carefully dismantling unsafe sections of the arch before temporary repairs are carried out.

The council hopes the temporary work can be completed by the end of October, allowing the bridge to reopen, although it has warned the timetable will depend on what engineers find once work begins and the availability of specialist contractors.

Councillor Malcolm Taylor, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for highways and transportation, said:

We recognise the disruption that the closure of Middleham Bridge is causing for residents, businesses and visitors and we would like to thank everyone for their continued patience while we progress this complex programme of work.

Given the bridge’s age, historic significance and listed status, it is vital that we fully understand the extent of the damage and ensure that repairs are carried out in a way that preserves its heritage while maintaining public safety.

The cost of the work is not yet known, with the council saying it will depend on structural assessments and the extent of the permanent repairs required.

The authority intends to seek to recover the repair costs from those responsible for the damage.

A permanent repair programme is expected to begin in spring 2027, subject to approvals including listed building consent.

This is likely to involve rebuilding the damaged historic arch and restoring its masonry features.

The council is also investigating whether the decorative arch could be reconstructed with greater clearance to reduce the likelihood of similar collisions in future.

Cllr Taylor said conservation specialists were being consulted to protect the historic character of the arches, while additional signage was also being considered.

A signed diversion will remain in place until the bridge can reopen.
