Harrogate’s main post office has escaped the latest round of TGJones closures, but its long-term future remains uncertain as the retailer continues to shut stores across the country.
TGJones confirmed on Wednesday, October 28, that its Scarborough store, which houses the town’s main post office, will close in January.
York’s TGJones-based post office closed this month, while branches in Redcar, Hull and Liverpool have also been affected by the wider closure programme.
TGJones has closed 36 stores so far in 2026 and expects to shut a further 34 by early 2027.
Private equity firm Modella Capital, which bought the former WHSmith high-street business last year, says TGJones is unviable in its current form.
The ongoing closures have raised questions about the future of Harrogate’s main post office, which operates inside TGJones in the Victoria Shopping Centre. The future of the TGJones store in Ripon is also uncertain, although it does not house a post office.
Harrogate’s post office moved from standalone premises on Cambridge Road into the former WHSmith store in 2019. The shop was rebranded as TGJones in July 2025.

TG Jones in Ripon
The Stray Ferret contacted Post Office Ltd to ask whether Harrogate’s branch was facing closure.
A spokesperson said: “We have not had a resignation from TG Jones for Harrogate Post Office.”
The response indicates that no formal resignation has been received for the Harrogate branch, although it does not guarantee that the post office or its host store will remain open in the longer term.
The Stray Ferret will continue to seek updates from TGJones and Post Office Ltd on the future of the Harrogate and Ripon stores.
