Car park machines are due to be replaced in Ripon next month.
Councillor Andrew Williams revealed the news at a Ripon City Council meeting on Monday (October 5).
North Yorkshire Council is replacing machines countywide as part of a move towards ticketless parking.
Under the new system, motorists will still be able to pay by cash, but also by card and app.
Tickets will no longer have to be displayed in vehicles.
Cllr Williams, the mayor, told the meeting the new system had benefits for motorists and hospitality venues.
He said:
It means if you have the app, you will be able to extend your parking time beyond your allotted time so if you bump into a friend and decide you want to go for a coffee or beer or whatever you don’t have to go back to your car. You can use the app and automatically extend it.
It seems to be working fairly well across the rest of North Yorkshire where it has been implemented, once people get used to the idea they are not getting a piece of paper to stick in their windscreen.
Civil enforcement officers use handheld devices to check registration numbers to see whether motorists have paid.
