For nine years, Tomahawk Steakhouse has been looking to set up a restaurant in Harrogate.
In 2021, the company stated it would be opening in January 2022, in the space on Cheltenham Parade that is now Rhubarb.
It then decided to change its location to where Solita Food Hall had been on Parliament Street, and was set to open in April 2022 – but legal issues meant things got “tied up”, leaving the chain “frustrated”.
Tomahawk then was going to open in the former Piccolino premises on Parliament Street and as recently as September 2026 that looked set to be the case, with posts on social media showing the progress being made inside.
However, in a Facebook post on October 1 the Tomahawk Steakhouse quietly announced that it has “paired up with sister brand Rio” and will instead be bringing a Japanese-Brazilian fusion restaurant called NIPO.
The statement continued:
Recently opened in Newcastle, NIPO brings together Japanese Precision with Brazilian fire. Expect robata-style steaks, sushi, bold flavours and dishes made for sharing.
The company has said this new restaurant will be open in the next couple of months, in time for the festive season.
On its website, under the FAQs section, it added:
Tomahawk Steakhouse was originally planned for this location. Those plans have changed, and the team behind its sister brand, Rio Brazilian Steakhouse, will now bring NIPO to Harrogate.
NIPO takes its name from the Nipo-Brasileiro community of São Paulo, shaped by more than a century of Japanese migration to Brazil. At NIPO, we celebrate that meeting of cultures through bold flavours and a generous welcome.
It doesn’t appear that all Tomahawk Steakhouse restaurants will be turned into NIPOs, with the other branches, including the one in York, still listed as open.
The Stray Ferret has contacted NIPO for more information.
