Readers’ Letters is a free weekly column giving you the chance to have your say on issues affecting the Harrogate district. It is an opinion column and does not reflect the views of the Stray Ferret. Send your views to letters@thestrayferret.co.uk.

Below were comments left under an article about the Tour of Britain and whether it was a success.

The race came past the end of our road. We made sure we were well out of the way before it arrived and went to the east coast for the day. I suppose that may have increased tourism revenues over there. £750k in North Yorkshire = lunch and an ice cream in East Yorkshire.

Gareth Owens

Apart from a few enthusiasts I believe it’s a waste of time and money financially. I’d love to see the assumptions used to support the claims of extra income that would be generated. For £750k the could have been a range of significant events staged across the year that could be hosted in conjunction with local traders that would be well advertised and well attended by the spending public. Previous cycling events have proved to just be vanity projects and this one it appears is no different.

Paul Kinsey

That's all they are — assumptions. There's never tangible justification for these sorts of events - just ephemeral wishful thinking which the gullible seem to accept.

Paul Reynolds

A costly sunken car

The below comments were left on a story about a car being recovered from the River Ure near Ripon

How on earth can it have cost £8,000 to drag it out of the river? Crazy.

Gordon Lund

This seems suspicious. The most revealing follow-up question to the Environment Agency or North Yorkshire Police would therefore be very specific: “Which VIN was illegible — the windscreen display, the door-aperture identification label, or the VIN permanently stamped into the right-hand floorpan? Was the stamped VIN cleaned and examined by a vehicle examiner, and were any forensic or electronic VIN-recovery methods attempted?”

Stanley Mackintosh
