Council explains lack of playground canopy in Harrogate's Valley Gardens
Local residents have expressed confusion over the disappearance of a canopy over a children’s playground in Harrogate.
In February 2023, Harrogate Borough Council installed a waterproof and UV-resistant canopy at the playground in the Valley Gardens, but it was noted that despite the heatwave this summer the canopy was not present.
The Stray Ferret contacted North Yorkshire Council to find out what had happened to the canopy, and whether local residents would see it again.
The council confirmed that the canopy had been removed due to weather conditions repeatedly destroying it.
In December 2023, a storm caused the canopy to be damaged beyond repair.
In January 2024, the decision was made to replace it. However, in November of that year there was another storm that destroyed the canopy.
Due to the increased frequency of extreme weather conditions, the decision has been made the decision not to install a new canopy.
