Independent Harrogate bookshop sells 176 extra books to cover costs
An independent bookshop in Harrogate gave customers a challenge after the government announced an increase in business rates.
Imagined Things Bookshop, on Montpellier Parade, calculated it would need to sell an extra 176 paperbacks to cover the increased cost, and called on people to help.
The bookshop posted on Instagram on March 18, saying:
If you’re in a position to buy an extra book we’d really appreciate it. Let us know it's an extra one by telling us in person in the shop or commenting at checkout on our website, and we'll colour a book in each time.
The shop coloured in a book for every extra purchase made.
In just a week, 28 extra books were purchased, and by the end of June the target had been reached.
In another post celebrating the achievement, Georgia Eckert, the store’s owner, said: “With rising costs everywhere we enormously appreciate every single book purchased, extra or regular. You help us to pay the rent, pay our wonderful booksellers, pay the bills and buy lots of brilliant new books! You help Imagined Things do wonderful things!”
Speaking to The Stray Ferret, Ms Eckert said:
Our community has always been great with our crowdfunding, but we don’t ever take it for granted. When we made this we just said ‘we’ll see what happens’. I thought we might do it, but I thought it would take a lot longer than three months.
