Nuffield Health said it intends to stay in Harrogate after plans were given the go-ahead to convert its gym on Hornbeam Park into offices.
Hornbeam Park Developments Ltd, which owns the site, had an application for “external alterations including new windows and rooflights” approved on Monday (October 19).
Part of the application included a document that stated the use of the building would be changed from "indoor sport, recreation or fitness" to "offices".
The Stray Ferret contacted Nuffield Health to ask what the decision meant for members of the gym and whether it was closing or moving premises.
A spokesperson said its current lease at Hornbeam Park runs until 2027 and that it was in discussions with the landlord over a renewal of the lease.
They said:
Nuffield Health remains committed to our Harrogate Fitness & Wellbeing Centre and the more than 2,500 members who use it.
We are currently in discussions with the landlord regarding the renewal of our lease, which runs until 2027, and our intention is to continue serving the Harrogate community for the long term. It is not unusual for landlords to explore options ahead of lease renewals, and we remain optimistic that a positive outcome can be reached that enables us to continue providing fitness and wellbeing services to local residents.
Planning permission is not required to convert the site into offices as they fall within the same broad class of use.
The proposed floorplan includes the creation of shared working space, individual offices and a café area.
