Police officer accused of calling man ‘a pervert’ faces misconduct hearing
A North Yorkshire Police officer accused of calling a member of the public a “pervert” and using unnecessary force against them is set to face a misconduct hearing.
PS Mathew Baldwin will face a hearing in Northallerton after it is alleged he breached North Yorkshire Police’s standards of professional behaviour on December 1, 2023, outside a pub.
A notice for the misconduct hearing said PS Baldwin breached in particular the standards for authority, respect and courtesy, orders and instructions, fitness for duty, and discreditable conduct.
It adds:
It is alleged that PS Baldwin, in the late evening on 1 December 2023, outside a brewery / public house, breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour for Police Officers, in his interaction with members of the public and other officers.
PS Baldwin is accused of failing to act with self-control on the night of the incident when he allegedly told a man he was a “pervert”, swore at police officers who attended the scene and used “inappropriate and unnecessary force on the male, the male’s wife and a police officer”.
It is also alleged that he gave other officers orders while drunk, put himself on duty while unfit for duty and behaved in a “threatening, abusive and/or inappropriate manner towards members of the public and police colleagues”.
The force said that the allegations before the hearing are so serious that they could amount to gross misconduct if proven.
The hearing, which will be overseen by assistant chief constable Ben Moseley, will be held on June 8 at North Yorkshire Police headquarters in Northallerton.
