Speed limit reduced in village between Harrogate and Knaresborough
A 40mph speed limit in a village between Harrogate and Knaresborough has been extended following longstanding safety concerns.
The 40mph limit on the B6165 Ripley Road in Nidd has been extended to the west of the village, in the direction of Harrogate.
A North Yorkshire Council spokesperson said the move came into effect on July 7.
They added:
The extension followed discussions with the local elected member, residents and North Yorkshire Police, after it was identified that a number of homes to the west of the village fell outside the previous 40mph limit. As a result, it was agreed that the speed limit should be extended to incorporate those properties, as well as the entrance to Nidd Hall.
The 60mph national speed limit, which applies on most of the B6165 between Knaresborough and the Ripley roundabout, was previously enforced on the stretch of road affected.

The Stray Ferret reported in 2023 that some villagers put up speed-themed scarecrows to highlight concerns about vehicles whizzing through the village.
Councillor Felicity Cunliffe-Lister, a Liberal Democrat whose Masham and Fountains division on North Yorkshire Council includes Nidd, said she had supported residents’ campaign for a speed reduction since she was elected in 2023 and she was pleased to see the change.
Cllr Cunliffe-Lister said new signs had been installed and residents had offered their drives to police for speed enforcement. One police van caught eight cars speeding in two hours recently, she added.
