Sunflower Bakery in Harrogate.

A Harrogate bakery has closed after just 16 months of operating.

Sunflower Bakery on Montpellier Parade opened its doors in August last year, making it the company’s third location at the time alongside sites in Thirsk and Boroughbridge.

It sold cakes, brownies, cookies and cake supplies.

However, in a social media post announcing the news, the bakery yesterday (December 7) said it has made the “difficult decision to close our Harrogate store”.

The post said:

It is with a very heavy heart that we have to announce that as a family we have made the difficult decision to close our beautiful Harrogate store.

It wasn’t part of our plan and we will say more in the coming weeks, but we have received so many messages that it’s important to us to keep our customers and followers up to date.

The post, which is signed by owner Kelly Days and the Sunflower Bakery team, adds the company’s Boroughbridge store remains “fully open” and all bespoke cake orders will be delivered there.

The bakery also said a new wholesale side of the business is “very much in full swing”.

It added:

This hasn’t been an easy decision as we love our Harrogate store and we know so many of you do too, so please give us time to take a breath and reflect on the awesome adventure we just had.

Ms Day previously told the Stray Ferret she had dreamed of opening a shop in Harrogate for two decades and said the purpose of the business was "to be creative and to have fun”.

The Stray Ferret contacted Ms Days for comment but we had not received a response at the time of publication.

Second closure in two months

The news comes after Sunflower Bakery announced in October its Thirsk store was to close “permanently and with immediate effect”.

The closure was attributed to an ongoing leak at the property, which could not be repaired quickly.

The company added at the time renovations to create a café area at the Boroughbridge shop were underway.
