Is council horticultural nursery to stay at Harlow Hill after all?

There are rumours the council horticultural nursery could be staying at Harlow Hill in Harrogate.

North Yorkshire Council Horticultural Nursery has been growing plants for the district's parks and gardens since 1974 and also sells directly to the public. It produces over 400,000 plants a year.

But in 2022 Harrogate Borough Council said the site was “no longer fit for purpose” and was unsuitable for redevelopment. It revealed it had identified a site in the Hampsthwaite and Killinghall ward for a new nursery and the site in Harlow Hill would be sold for housing.

The Harrogate district Local Plan 2014-35 says 40 homes could be built on the land. But in 2022 the council revealed plans to build 62 homes and flats with gardens. This prompted concerns from residents and as well as the local councillor.

Social media speculation

Posts appeared on social media over the weekend saying nursery staff had said the nursery will now remain at its original site.

These two posts were shared to Facebook:

The Stray Ferret contacted North Yorkshire Council if the posts were true and, if so, the reason for the change of plan.

We will update readers when we receive a response.
