A Harrogate-based robotics company, Synovate, has built robots which are set to help reduce leaks in water and gas pipes.
The ‘LeakVISION’ robot uses thermal imagining technology from aircraft to detect minor temperate changes in pipelines and identify leakages.
The robot can be deployed remotely, reducing the excavation needed to find a leak whilst avoiding road closures.
The LeakVISION robot has already been trialled successfully with Northern Gas.
Synovate worked with Northern Gas to train repair-workers to operate the robot. The idea is to make jobs safer and more efficient without making them obsolete.
Simon Langdale, engineering director at Synovate, said:
“The LeakVISION robots will make it easier and faster to identify and fix leaks, which will be a significant benefit to the environment. In addition, deploying robots saves time and resources over traditional excavation methods.
“We are also trialling new technology where the robots will seal leaks from within the pipes, further reducing the need for extensive digging.”
Synovate worked with experts from universities in Sheffield, Birmingham, Bristol and Leeds as part of the Pipebots scheme to help create the robots.
In addition to the LeakVISION robot, the company is also designing robots to spot hydrogen leaks.

Seven weeks of gas works set to start on Ripon’s Clotherholme Road
Seven weeks of roadworks are set to start on Ripon’s Clotherholme Road from Monday.
Work is being carried out by Northern Gas Networks to replace ageing pipework with plastic pipes.
It will see temporary traffic lights in place on Clotherholme Road for seven weeks from July 18.

Russ Kaye, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said:
“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Ripon.
“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”

Scott Kitchingman, business operations lead for Northern Gas Networks, said:
“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works.
“We greatly appreciated the patience that Harrogate customers showed us when we carried out work at Skipton Road earlier this year, and we’ll be doing our very best to minimise any disruption during this project at Knox Avenue and Bilton Grange Close.
“However, it is vital we complete the work in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Harrogate.
“Northern Gas Networks is continuing to carry out its essential activities while following strict guidelines for safe distance working, where possible, and following good hygiene practices as we continue to live with coronavirus.
“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
