A section of Wetherby Road in Harrogate reopened this morning after a burst pipe forced it to close for three days.
The busy section between Masham Close and Hookstone Road is now open. The road has also been resurfaced.
Its closure on Friday just before rush hour caused misery for motorists. North Yorkshire County Council, the highways authority, said it hoped it would reopen over the weekend.
But Yorkshire Water said the burst pipe caused “significant damage” and engineers needed more time to complete repairs.
It was thought the road could be closed until tomorrow.

This was the road on Saturday while repairs were ongoing.
Long delays were reported across the weekend with commuters having to find alternative routes.
A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water said:
“Our teams have worked hard throughout the weekend to ensure disruption caused by the burst pipe on Wetherby Road were kept to a minimum. Our work has been completed ahead of schedule and the road has now been reopened.”

Controversial Harrogate road closure starts today
Beech Grove will close to through traffic today as part of a council bid to create a “low traffic neighbourhood”.
The road closure will be in place for six months and, depending on the results of a public consultation, could become permanent.
Work to install the signage, bollards and planters will take three days from Monday, weather permitting.
It is hoped the move will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. It will also link to the new Otley Road cycle path, work on which is due to begin in spring.
Residents, refuse collections and emergency services will still have access to the area.
But motorists will no longer be able to get directly from Otley Road to West Park via Beech Grove.

North Yorkshire County Council revealed the proposals two weeks ago and it quickly divided the town into two camps.
Cycling and green groups were in favour, seeing it as a shift towards a more environmentally friendly town.
Harrogate’s chamber of commerce and business improvement district raised concerns about the impact on the high street, however.

Residents on the streets have also contacted the Stray Ferret to express their displeasure at the town centre detour now needed to head towards Starbeck or Leeds.
When the cycle route is completed, cyclists will be able to turn from Otley Road onto Beech Grove, which would be free from traffic, and connect with another earmarked cycle route on Victoria Avenue.
Six weeks of roadworks begin on Leeds RoadSix weeks of roadworks began this morning on the Leeds Road roundabout, leaving the area gridlocked throughout the day.
The works will be in place until August 28 to allow Northern Powergrid to carry out cable overlay works.
Two of the roundabout’s six exits on Langcliffe Avenue and Park Drive have been closed and traffic lights are in place on the others. This left many commuters stuck in traffic or having to take long diversions.

The roadworks are set to stay along Leeds Road for six weeks.
Similar works are taking place along Skipton Road over a 12-week period. Those works are in order for Northern Gas Networks to replace the old metal pipes running along the road. Richard White, business operations lead for Northern Gas Networks, said:
“This investment will ensure residents and businesses in Harrogate continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for decades to come.
“We appreciate that no one likes roadworks, but we will be doing everything possible to complete this work as quickly as possible, while maintaining safe working practices.”

The works come following several quieter months on the roads as many people worked from home. Following the Prime Minister’s announcements suggesting that people can return to work, the next six weeks are likely to involve much longer commutes.
The Stray Ferret asked North Yorkshire County Council for a comment on the works, but had not received a response at the time of publication.
