The National Shooting Show is back for 2024 – here’s what you need to know

This story is sponsored by The National Shooting Show.

Fieldsports fans are in for a treat if they go along to the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate from May 11-12, 2024 where The National Shooting Show (NSS)  is being held.

Clay shooting, airgunning, HFT shooting, practical shooting and fullbore target shooting are all on offer. For non-shooters there are working dog displays, ferreting, falconry, archery and axe throwing too – the event promises to be an event the whole family can enjoy.

You may have known of the National Shooting Show under its previous guise as The Northern Shooting Show, so why the name change?

James Gower, CEO of organisers Stable Events explained:

“We looked where visitors to the show were coming from and rather than being focused on the north, people were coming from all over the UK – from London to Cornwall, Wales and the Midlands.

“So it was obviously a show of national interest and we changed the name to illustrate this. There are no plans to take it down south – we’ve also signed up for Harrogate in 2025 too.”

Try before you buy

Perhaps one of the biggest attractions of the NSS is that it enables visitors to try guns and optics outside on a range and see how kit they’re interested in buying handles.

Key figures from the worlds of stalking, keeping, clay shooting, wild food, gun dog training and pigeon shooting are acting as ‘ambassadors’ for the NSS. All will be present at the NSS, giving talks and on hand to answer questions and give useful tips.

Experiences

Ever fancied trying a .50 calibre rifle? Well, that’s just one of the experiences on offer, thanks to the Fifty Calibre Shooters Association (UK), which is offering visitors a rare chance to learn how to handle, load and aim a .50 calibre rifle under careful instruction.

Airsoft devotees will be pleased to hear that this fast-paced combat game is on offer at the Airsoft experience.

Not forgetting dogs

Watching a well-trained gun dog at work is a joy and Kirkbourne Spaniels will be running the BASC-sponsored scurry, as well as holding a working test competition. There is also a dog creche run by a qualified vet.

Talks

In the symposium area, figures from the world of fieldsports will be discussing the hot topics of the day. It is the perfect place to sit back, watch and listen when a rest is in order.

Food, glorious food

The Shooting  Lodge is a great place to catch up with friends over a pint and a new cafe area will be offering wild game and venison.

Those searching for culinary inspiration will find it in BASC Hunter’s Kitchen, where game chefs will create new dishes for all levels of cookery skills, using nature’s larder.

The Knaresborough shop ‘delivering beeswax products directly from Mother Nature’The Knaresborough shop ‘delivering beeswax products directly from Mother Nature’

This story is sponsored by The Yorkshire Beeswax Candle Co.

The Yorkshire Beeswax Candle Co is an integral part of a thriving independent business community in Knaresborough, selling a vast array of natural products including candles, wax melts, soaps, lip balms and honey.

But the popular business may not have come to pass, for many reasons – one of which was that founder Michael Landreth was afraid of bees. Luckily, a friend’s form of exposure therapy meant that he soon came to respect the insects, and understand the potential in the produce that they created.

He explained:

“My friend put me in front of his beehives, and I could either run or face my fear. Working so closely with bees now has helped me overcome that fear.”

Additionally, if Michael hadn’t decided to take redundancy from his former job during the Covid-19 pandemic, the company may never have flourished into the successful enterprise it is today.

While a period of furlough allowed him to focus on growing The Yorkshire Beeswax Candle Co, it was still a ‘difficult decision’ to leave his employment and dedicate himself to the business full time, but one he felt he had to make.

According to Michael, this was a risky move that ultimately paid off; today he is the proud owner of 43 beehives and a shop in the historic market town of Knaresborough that boasts an all-natural product range.

He said:

“I wanted to be in a quirky area, and Green Dragon Yard fit in with that quaint, cobbled feel.”

The Yorkshire Beeswax Candle Co stocks a diverse range of products; from candles made from plant-based aromatherapy oils to beeswax cosmetics such as lip balms and body butters, there’s something to suit many tastes.

The shop interior

Since opening the premises, Michael has been delighted to receive lots of positive feedback from residents and tourists alike.

“The comments I’ve received are mind-blowing – absolutely fantastic. I have some customers who visited from Dublin, and they liked my products so much, they ordered more online when they got home.

“I even have a customer who orders all the way from Singapore.”

While it’s clear his products have established a popularity across the local area – and beyond – since establishing The Yorkshire Beeswax Candle Co Michael is always looking at ways to push the business on and progress further.

2024 is proving to be one of the company’s biggest years to date; with the creation of a bee-friendly garden, the imminent opening of a honeycomb waffle bar and introducing a children’s education centre all about bees, to name just a few plans.

The Yorkshire Beeswax Candle Co. products

Michael added:

“People really should pop in a visit the shop, to find out what’s going on, and how we can help them.

“Fundamentally though, we’re delivering beeswax products directly from Mother Nature.”

Harrogate estate agents sees renewed interest in self-build homes

This story is sponsored by Linley & Simpson.

A Harrogate estate agency has seen renewed interest in the number of people looking to follow the European trend and build their own home.

The new homes department at Linley & Simpson believes there is a growing appetite in the community to take advantage of this approach amid the cost of living crisis.

As a result, it has launched a new research project to pinpoint how big the interest is.

On the continent, around one-in-three homes are self or custom build – yet in England, the figure is less than 10%.

In Harrogate district, even fewer are following this trend with government statistics showing that just 95 planning permissions for serviced plots have been granted since ministers launched the Right to Build initiative in 2016.

The legislation was designed to address concerns about affordability, and make it easier for people who wanted to build or commission their own home.

David Waddington, director of new homes at Linley & Simpson, said the cost benefits of self-build, coupled with a greater choice of prime plots coming to the market across Harrogate district, has recently increased the appeal of buying and building a personalised home in this way.

He said:

“According to the National Custom and Self Build Association, England has the lowest proportion of self-build homes in the developed world.

“There are big differences in the popularity of self-build across the UK but we believe there is a growing appetite for the concept across the Harrogate district.

“Our aim is to try to identify the size of this hidden demand.

“Much of the interest is location driven – demand for property in Harrogate is high enough for people to choose this route in order to get their dream home in the right place.

“It’s also being spurred on by cost of living pressures and rising inflation as there are significant stamp duty savings with self-build, as you are only buying the value of the land and not a complete house.

“Plots are usually available in rural, semi-rural and suburban areas so there’s no shortage of choice. And roads, sewers and services will already be connected so it’s a real turnkey solution, ready for immediate use.”

Many neighbouring areas have seen far greater numbers of self-build projects – Hambleton, for example, has had 124 in the same timescale while further afield, Cherwell in Oxfordshire reports almost 6,000.

In 2021, more than 12,000 people joined the Right to Build registers, which helps aspiring custom and self-builders find plots – a year-on-year increase of 31%.

If you’re interested in self-build homes and want to find out more, contact Lucy Collinge at Linley and Simpson on lucy.collinge@linleyandsimpson.co.uk or call 01423 540054.

Boutique Harrogate firm wins digital marketing agency of the year award

This article is sponsored by The Micro Agency.

A Harrogate company has won an award for digital marketing agency of the year after being praised for its “personal touch”.

The Micro Agency, which is based at Harrogate Business Centre, was awarded the title at the Innovation and Excellence Awards 2022.

Founded by married couple Carly Chaffer and Gary Hartley, the agency was given the award after judges recognised their “personal touch”, “consistency of reviews” and “community feel”.

Judges were also impressed with how the couple managed to retain clients during the covid pandemic. The agency has since looked to grow off the back of this as more companies invest in digital opportunities.

The company was founded three years ago after Carly and Gary decided to leave their previous freelance work behind and team up to launch the agency.

The couple wanted to combine their skills and offer something more personal for clients.

As part of the agency, Carly heads up the marketing side and Gary handles the website design and development.

Together, the couple boast 35 years experience in the industry and pride themselves on being approachable and personable with clients.

‘It was brilliant’

Ahead of picking up the award at a ceremony in December in Leeds, Carly said it was an unbelievable achievement for the couple.

She said:

“It was brilliant to find out the news.

“We know we are not the biggest, but we pride ourselves on getting results and building long-term relationships with our clients.”

But, the couple are no strangers to picking up awards.

Over her 15 years in the industry, Carly was was named as one of the Top 30 Women Under 30 in Digital by global media platform The Drum and was also shortlisted for Young Achiever of the Year at the Sue Ryder Awards.

For the future, the pair hope to continue their personal approach to clients and continue to grow their base.

Harrogate marketing agency toasts 20-year longevity with bespoke beer

This article is sponsored by Extreme.

A Harrogate-based marketing firm has shared its 20th anniversary celebrations with clients by creating a bespoke beer to mark its longevity.

Extreme was set up in 2002 by directors Antony Prince and Mark Gledhill and focused on brochure websites and small search engine optimisation projects, before demand increased and the pair hired a range of experts to handle requests for both marketing and development.

Since then the company, which is based at Harrogate’s Windsor House, has gone from strength-to-strength. Their team of 25 in-house experts help business and brands of all sizes, local and international, with every aspect of their marketing.

To celebrate its two decades of success, Extreme teamed up with Harrogate Brewing Co to create “Staying Power”, a session IPA which would help mark the milestone but also represent the agency’s longevity and skills in branding.

Staying Power.

Antony Prince, director at Extreme, said:

“20 years in a fast-paced and sometimes fickle industry is something we’re very proud of.

“We’ve built a fantastic reputation for our creative and technical capabilities and we’ve worked with some amazing brands.”

As well as a celebration of the milestone, the beer was also an opportunity for Extreme to flex its muscles and show its talent in branding.

The idea behind the brand was to create a product which represented endurance but also adaptability.

Extreme used the story of the hare and tortoise, which teaches that self-belief, confidence and patience are the key to longevity and, as such, “staying power”.

As a mark of appreciation, staff at Extreme shared the beer with a host of its clients both old and new.

The design represents adaptability and longevity.

Martha Joyce, Branding and Social Manager at Harrogate Brewing Co, said:

“Working with Extreme to create a bespoke beer for their 20th Anniversary has been an absolute pleasure.

“As a family business with a true passion for beer and brewing, we use only the best ingredients so we can deliver quality craft ales to all our clients.

“By joining forces with the incredible design talents of those at Extreme, we’ve certainly created a beer worthy of celebration and the cause it was created for.

“It’s always a great experience to team up with other local businesses and produce something special to celebrate their achievements. On behalf of everyone at Harrogate Brewing Co, we’d like to congratulate them on their milestone – we hope this beer exemplifies at its best, your true ‘Staying Power’.”
