Starbeck estate gets a clean up after increase in litter

Members of the Starbeck community got together to go litter-picking after they noticed an increase in rubbish in the area.

A group of 10 adults and children filled 20 bin bags in two hours cleaning up the Dalby Estate.

Starbeck residents have a history of community action – a large number of volunteers took part in The Big Help Out on the weekend of the King’s Coronation.

Joanne Hope, one of the litter-pickers involved on the Dalby Estate, told the Stray Ferret:

“This all started a few weeks ago when we noticed Panhandle Park, Starbeck, in a state.

“I thought I’d set up a Facebook page to help support each other and pull together as a community. This then led to the litter picking session.”

Ms Hope added:

“The guys who turned up did so well, and I’m so proud of everyone”.

The group now plans to meet regularly to get the community cleaner, eventually venturing out to other areas in the future.

White horses to carry Harrogate’s Sophie Lambert on her final journey

White horses decorated with purple will carry Harrogate’s Sophie Lambert on her final journey this week.

Sophie, 22, was found dead last month after a five-day missing person search that touched the lives of thousands of people in Harrogate and beyond.

Animal lover Sophie was particularly fond of horses and her big brother Craig Robinson has chosen two to pull a carriage carrying her body to Harrogate’s Stonefall Crematorium on Friday.

Her pet chihuahuas Boston and Bentley will wear jumpers saying ‘my mummy is in heaven’.

Sophie loved animals and had two dogs.

A crowdfunding appeal set up by Craig to give Sophie “the best send-off ever” has raised more than £3,700 — well above the £3,000 target.

He wrote on social media:

“Well, Soph, these beautiful horses are the ones I’ve picked for you with purple on there as well as you loved bright colours, these horses will bring you home one last time my angel.

“I hope I’ve done you proud and done everything to be perfect for you.”

The 40-minute service at 11am, which will be live-streamed, will be followed by drinks celebrating Sophie’s life at the Malt Shovel in Brearton.

The purple and white horses will match Sophie’s favourite colours.

There is no dress code but Craig has requested everyone wears odd socks because, as Craig puts it, “Sophie never did believe in wearing the same coloured socks as she said life was to short to match them”.

He has been setting of bio-degradeable lanterns this week in memory of Sophie, and said:

“I thank you all once again for the support help and donations you guys have given us in order to give Sophie the spend off she has always deserved. Rest easy Sophie my little Angel night night.”

Starbeck children urge drivers to switch engines off at level crossing

Primary students in Starbeck have urged local drivers to turn off their engines while waiting at a level crossing.

Pupils took part in a competition organised by the Starbeck Residents’ Association to design a banner asking motorists to “Stop Idling”.

The Starbeck level crossing is known for being one of the most congested areas in Harrogate.  It is used on average by over 14,000 vehicles daily, many of which keep their engines running whilst waiting for a train to pass.

This is not the first time Starbeck Primary Academy has campaigned on the issue, having participated in an educational campaign on the same problem last year.

Chris Watt, Chair of the Starbeck Residents’ Association, commented:

“People using our High Street are being subjected to unnecessary air pollution which could be improved if drivers simply turned off their engines while waiting at the level crossing.

“They would also save on their own fuel bills.”

Approximately 40,000 deaths a year in the UK are linked to air pollution, according to the Royal College of Physicians.

Emissions are particularly harmful to children’s growing lungs.

Headteacher, Garry de Castro-Morland said:

“This is a vital topic that we continue to discuss with our pupils and work closely with the community to tackle.”

He also emphasised the importance of a curriculum with a focus on environmental issues that could leave a positive impact on local communities.

The winning banner design, created by enthusiastic year five pupil Freya, 10, has recently been unveiled near Starbeck station where it is now visible to motorists.

Mr Watt added:

“The entries to our competition were amazing, showing huge imagination and creativity and we are delighted with the final banner.”

The Residents’ Association hopes that the school’s contribution will serve as a lasting reminder to drivers to switch their engines off at the crossing.

The Stray Ferret has asked the council for the specific dates when the pool is planned to be closed but has not yet had a response.

It is due to be the second time this year the baths will shut for maintenance work.

The facility was closed for a month in April due to an “unforeseen mechanical failure”, which coincided with the Easter school holidays.

Brimhams Active, which was set up by Harrogate Borough Council but is now run by North Yorkshire Council, manages leisure facilities in the Harrogate district.

At the time, it said an an air leak in the pool plant equipment caused poor water clarity led to the closure.

The pool reopened on May 11.

Sophie’s body was found in the River Nidd this week, five days after she wet missing from her home in Starbeck.

It was already over halfway towards its target last night.

Craig said Sophie was a bright girl who loved to laugh and had two dogs but had battled suffering every day for 10 years.

Craig shared this photo of his sister.

He added:

“This gofundme is for her funeral for us to be able to give her the best send off ever, please don’t feel pressured into donating as we have already set one up before for fuel and other resources,

Volunteers spruce up Starbeck and the Pinewoods

Armies of volunteers have been out in force lately, doing their bit to improve the parts of Harrogate they care most about.

Starbeck railway station has been given a makeover by a team of volunteers from Northern, Starbeck in Bloom, Friends of Starbeck Station and Halifax Station Partnership. They gave the underpass a new lick of paint and then spent time litter-picking and tidying up the platforms, underpass and surrounding areas.

There are now plans for three murals to be installed at the station.

Volunteers have given Starbeck railway station a “clean bill of health”.

Tony Baxter, regional director at Northern said:

“I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered to spend the day at Starbeck – there has been an amazing transformation in just one day.”

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, litter-pickers are hoping to make the effects of their work last longer by putting up new ‘Volunteers Have Tidied Here’ signs.

A pilot study by Keep Britain Tidy has found that such signs, telling the public about volunteers’ clean-up efforts, can help reduce littering by more than 40%.

The signs, designed specifically for the Pinewoods Conservation Group, have been paid for by Walker Foster Solicitors.

Neil Hind, chair of the Pinewoods Conservation Group, said:

“We are very grateful to Walker Foster Solicitors for their funding to help make this happen and to our many volunteers who litter-pick as part of our organised events and also in their own time.

“We hope that these signs act as a reminder that somebody is giving up their time to pick up litter that should have been disposed of properly.”

The Pinewoods Conservation Group plans to hold various work sessions over the summer that will be advertised on its website and on social media.
