Several restaurants and bars will be offering cut-price deals next month as part of the Harrogate district’s first Restaurant Week.
The offers include three courses for £20 at Harrogate’s West Park Hotel and lunch and a drink for £10 at The Inn at Cheltenham Parade in Harrogate. Other venues taking part include Manahatta and Cosy Club in Harrogate and The Inn South Stainley, which is offering two cocktails for £10.
Restaurant Week, organised by tourism organisation Destination Harrogate, will take place from February 6 to 10.

Businesses that sign up will offer set-price menus to customers who quote the offer. It is hoped the initiative will enable them to attract new customers and get a publicity boost.
John McGivern, destination events manager for Destination Harrogate, which is part of Harrogate Borough Council, urged people to “book in and tuck in”, adding:
“Excellent food and drink is a firm offer within the Harrogate district’s visitor experience, and through focusing on our tourism strengths, we’re showcasing our best stories to attract more visitors and to set us apart from our competitors.
“The initiative also supports our commitment to sustainable tourism, encouraging visits during times of the year when, traditionally, visitor numbers have been lower. Spreading visitor footfall across the year lowers impact to the environment, and offers new opportunities to our local businesses, along with great deals for our visitors and residents alike.”

Weetons wins Harrogate’s Christmas shop window competition
Weetons has been declared the overall winner of the Harrogate Christmas Window Dressing competition 2022.
Store manager Jess Upson and Vicky Davis designed and produced the award-winning display at the food hall on West Park.
A total of 26 shops entered the competition, which was organised by Harrogate Business Improvement District and the Rotary Club of Harrogate.
Weetons won the overall category as well as the prize in the large shops category. West Park Hotel, Bettys and Mama Doreen’s Emporium were highly commended in the large shops category.
Helen James Flowers on Station Parade won the medium shops category, with The Yorkshire Soap Company highly recommended.
In the small shops category, Harrogate International Festivals came out on top. Sophie Likes, Foxy Vintage and interiors, Susie Watson Designs and Bijouled earned highly recommended accolades.
The winners were announced at the West Park Hotel on Tuesday. Harrogate borough mayor Cllr Victoria Oldham handed out certificates.

A former Masterchef contestant has been appointed as the new head chef at the Coach & Horses in Harrogate.
Formerly executive chef at Harewood Estate and a semi-finalist of the 2016 MasterChef: The Professionals, Josh Whitehead will head up the kitchen at the pub on the corner of West Park and Tower Street.
His new menu will see seasonal produce sourced from the Provenance’s own kitchen garden, or from carefully selected partners across the region.

Josh, who will work alongside his best friend, Andy Castle, who was head chef at the Ox Club in Leeds, said:
“I am really excited about the Coach & Horses, with a great place in the history of Harrogate and a promising future, myself and Andy look forward to cooking up delicious British classics using the best possible produce with love and respect.
“Our aim to is cook dishes that are comforting and familiar whilst drawing inspiration from British pubs, exceptional ingredients and classic cookery, with a typical Josh and Andy flair.”
Starting his career washing pots in nearby Wetherby, Josh quickly shifted to front of house at Restaurant Bar & Grill, Harrogate, where he helped the head chef to prep shifts in the kitchen. Biding his time, he was promoted to commis, his first paid chef role.

However, it was during his training at Thomas Danby college, Leeds, he got a taste for working with fine dining restaurant Anthony’s.
Many subsequent roles, including Harvey Nichols, The Tetley, Northern Bloc Ice Cream and then the opening of House of Koko, all helped to prepare him for his role.
It was during this time that he also met his best friend, sous chef Andy, while working at the Ox Club.
While working as executive chef at The Harewood Food & Drink Project, he learnt about various aspects of livestock, wild game, vegetables and foraging.

Grants up to £3,000 available to Harrogate district community groupsCommunity groups in the Harrogate district are being invited to apply for grants of up to £3,000.
The Local Fund for the Harrogate District opened today for applications to its latest round of awards.
The fund is a three-way partnership between Harrogate Borough Council, Harrogate & District Community Action and Two Ridings Community Foundation.
it focuses on small organisations with charitable aims where a small amount of money can make a significant difference.
The guidance notes say:
“Local groups can apply for activities and services that support people, keeping them connected to their community and with each other.
“This may be particularly important during the cost-of-living crisis, you may want to run more activities throughout the winter months, so people have a warm space to access.
“We cannot support overheads alone but encourage you to include them as part of your application and our commitment to full cost recovery.”

A total of 14 groups received a total of £40,688 in the last funding round, which was celebrated at an event at West Park Hotel in Harrogate last night.
Successful applicants included Boroughbridge and District Community Care, Nidderdale and Pateley Bridge Men’s Shed, St. Andrew’s Church in Burnt Yates, Pannal Ash Junior Football Club and Harrogate District of Sanctuary.
A total of £84,681 was given to 29 groups in the previous year.
The deadline for the new funding round is January 9. Decisions will be made by mid-February.
Grants from £200 to £3,000 are available.
Applicants must be based in and/or working in the area served by Harrogate Borough Council.

Jan Garrill, chief executive of Two Ridings Community Foundation, said:
“It is five years since The Local Fund was launched and since 2018, 88 projects have been supported and £237,266 paid out in grants.
“These grants have supported activities around mental health, inequality, hidden poverty and loneliness. More recently they have assisted in the response to and recovery from covid and now the impact of increases in the cost of living.
“Despite the local government changes in 2023 the fund will remain for the long term, supporting local grass roots community action across the whole of the district and with local people involved in decisions about the awards.”

Cancer patients take to catwalk in Harrogate fundraiserCancer patients will take to the catwalk in Harrogate next week for a fundraising fashion show.
Harrogate woman Jean Williams and husband Alan have raised £100,000 for cancer charities since she had breast cancer 25 years ago. Ms Williams even took part in the 2018 New York marathon aged 71 to generate funds.
Now she has teamed up with West Park Hotel to stage the Strutting for Cancer fashion show for the first time since covid in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on November 10.
The event will feature people who have been affected by cancer as well as professional models showcasing new collections from sponsors, including local fashion businesses Sheer Bliss lingerie, Smithers, Prey Four, Georgies and Aurélie, as well as high street retailer Marks & Spencer.
There will also be a charity auction, raffle and live music.
Ms Williams said:
“Having launched our inaugural Strutting for Cancer fashion show six years ago, it has proved to be a hugely popular event with local people as well as raising vital funds for this amazing charity.
“After missing two years due to the pandemic, we are thrilled that the show is returning and would like to thank West Park Hotel for providing such a fantastic venue as well as our generous sponsors for their support.
“Having had cancer twice myself, this is a cause close to my heart and I am excited to see the return of this event which we hope will once again raise thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support.”

Harrogate’s historic Coach & Horses pub to reopen this month
A historic Harrogate pub with a history dating as far back as 1830 is set to return this month after a two-year hiatus.
The Coach & Horses, well-known for its traditional charm, Sunday roasts and real ales, will reopen on Friday, July 22.
Provenance Inns, which owns the West Park Hotel on the same street, took over the pub in October last year.
It has been closed since May 2020 after previous landlord John Nelson had his licence revoked for breaching covid rules.
The refurbishment aims to add “a touch of modernity to the pub”, whilst paying homage to its heritage.
The first floor has been transformed into a dining room, which overlooks The Stray.
A gastropub-style menu will feature dishes including Doreen’s black pudding scotch eggs, beer battered fish and triple-cooked beef dripping chips, as well as a traditional Sunday roast.

The Coach and Horses burger will see £1 from each sale donated to Martin House children’s hospice, a charity relationship the new owners are keen to foster.
The pub will also offer a selection of pies, while an extensive range of local and international gins will complement a selection of cask ales.

Speaking ahead of the reopening, which will create 30 new jobs, operations manager Chris Cartledge said:
‘’As one of just a handful of Harrogate’s oldest surviving traditional pubs, it’s safe to say that anticipation for the return of the Coach & Horses has been high.
“We’re pleased to say that meticulous care and attention to detail has been taken to ensure the Coach is subtly modernised, whilst restoring original features, where possible, to their best.’
“The new first-floor dining room is the perfect spot to enjoy our hearty and traditional menu, whilst taking in the views of The Stray.
“Along with our fresh food and vast drinks range, we will also be carrying on the tradition of a regular quiz night and of course raffles, all in aid of local charities which we are keen to continue to support.

We are just weeks away from celebrating HRH Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, making her the country’s longest-reigning monarch.
Her Majesty actually succeeded the throne from her father, King George VI, on February 6, 1952, but as her jubilee would also mark the date of his death, it has always been celebrated four months later on June 3.
Events are being planned across the Harrogate district in celebration, but many will want to enjoy the occasion more privately with friends and family at home.
We spoke to seven Harrogate food and drink businesses to find out how they are celebrating and got some tips on what to include in good old-fashioned British spread:
Mama Doreen’s Emporium

Jessica Wyatt, owner of Mama Doreen’s, said:
“We are doing a 1950s-inspired afternoon tea. We are taking the most popular puddings from around that decade and including them in our afternoon tea. It’s something a little bit different and a little bit special. You’ve got the cherries Jubilee, English trifle, Victoria sponge butterfly buns, shortbread, Coronation chicken sandwich and even a cucumber sandwich.
“My favourite afternoon tea item is butterfly buns because that’s what my grandma used to make. I think a lot of people have that same nostalgia.”
“For the actual Bank Holiday weekend we’re going to dress up in 1950s outfits, we’ve got singers performing throughout the day. We are going above and beyond with the balloons outside. We are also doing the Jubilee afternoon teas to take away and we can deliver to the Stray.
“We are really trying to push the street parties and get communities together. So we have put everything for a street party on our website, from the bunting down to the hats.
“I’m really looking forward to just feeling the buzz around Harrogate. Loads of people will be visiting and all the locals will be out and hopefully the weather will be lovely as well. I just think after the last couple of years it’s what the community needs. “

Thomas Lonsdale, restaurant supervisor at Weetons, said:
“It’s only right that you should have strawberries and cream for your picnic or with your afternoon tea. I’d also choose choose sausage rolls, pork pies, salads, baguettes, cheese, olives and wine. We’ve actually got some cans of mixers coming in, which will be really good.
“I’ll be getting into the spirit of the weekend on the Stray or at a street party.
“We have luxury Jubilee hampers available, which are perfect for just picking up and carrying across the road to the Stray.”
Fodder

Iced shortbread biscuits and a cup of Yorkshire tea at Fodder.
Jo Francisco, PR manager at Fodder, said ready-made picnics would be available at the food hall.
Jo said:
“People can book their Jubilee picnic at Fodder with pies, quiches, cheese boxes, meat packs and barbecue packs all available to pre-order ready for the Jubilee celebrations.
“Throughout the Jubilee week, there will be a Jubilee-themed afternoon tea on offer in Fodder café, as well as stunning cakes from the Cake Lady Harrogate. These will include Champagne truffle chocolate cake, raspberry blueberry and white chocolate cake and Victoria sponge cupcakes.”

It includes Dubonnet, Tanquery Gin and Angustura Orange Bitters with a flavour profile of fig, red berries, orange and junipers, which is elegant yet strong – quite like her Royal Highness.”

Edward Lee, barista at Thug Sandwich, said you can’t beat a good sausage roll or scotch egg when it comes to the perfect accompaniment for your Jubilee picnic.
He added:
“When it comes to sandwiches, I’d recommend a good old fashioned Ploughmans, as it includes popular British ingredients and you can’t go wrong.
“This should all be washed down with a good sessionable pale ale.
“Having great food and drink is important. However, it’s not all about the occasion, but about the people you spend it with.”
Whittaker’s Gin

Jane Whittaker, co-founder of Whittaker’s Gin, which is based in Dacre Banks, said:
Harrogate’s Coach & Horses pub set to reopen in early July“We are releasing a Jubilee Edition gin.
“We have based the recipe on our existing Summer Solstice Gin, but tweaked the amount of grapefruit in the distillation and have added natural colouring to the liquid.
“We have changed all our gold foiling to silver to match the with Platinum theme and added an additional commemorative label.
“We thought this would not only be pleasing to the eye because of the colouring on the official Palace Jubilee roundel, but also our Summer Solstice is so popular, especially at this time of year.”
Drinkers will be able to finally reacquaint themselves with the Coach & Horses this summer after over two years.

Provenance has been busy revamping the bar and kitchen area and reinstating the corner entrance.

Scaffolding outside the building recently came down ahead of the Coach & Horses’ new era.
The company has designed a new logo for the pub but has promised to respect its long heritage with the refurbishment.
Provenance’s commercial manager Anthony Blundell said there is still work to do but he is hopeful the pub and restaurant will reopen in early July.
He said:
“Everyone is eagerly awaiting the reopening of the Coach and no one is more excited than us to get to know some of the previous patrons and, hopefully, some new ones too.”
