The Stray Ferret Business Awards to make its return in 2024

Not even an amber weather warning could stop the Stray Ferret Business Awards in March, with a turnout of nearly 400 people and many smiling faces, we’re looking forward to doing it all again in 2024.

Following the success of our inaugural event, the Stray Ferret Business Awards will be making its return next year – and we’re ready to receive your entries!

Sponsored by local financial advisers Prosperis, the Stray Ferret Business Awards 2024 will take place in the Pavilions of Harrogate on Thursday, March 14.

The awards ceremony will recognise businesses of all sectors and sizes to highlight the best and brightest in the Harrogate district’s business community – including Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, Boroughbridge, Masham and Nidderdale.

The black-tie event will include our all-important awards ceremony, a special Winner’s Lounge sponsored by LCF Law and entertainment throughout the evening

Whether you’ve seen significant business growth, place sustainability at the centre of your core values, or provide great progression for your employees, our awards will shine a light on excellent organisations and individuals.

Digital marketing conference to be autumn highlight of business calendar

One of the region’s biggest digital marketing events will hit Harrogate this autumn, as hundreds of industry professionals come together for a lively day of discussion, exhibition and networking. 

The event, which is sponsored by York & North Yorkshire Growth Hub and Yorkshire law firm Ison Harrison, and is free for delegates to attend, will also feature 25 trade stands for local companies in the industry, such as social media agencies, web designers, content writers, videographers and photographers.

The full day conference will take place on Thursday, September 28 at Pavilions of Harrogate, the indoor event venue at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

We’re here to help, so use us, says local business Growth Hub

The range of support the York and North Yorkshire Growth Hub offers came as something of a surprise to many members of the Stray Ferret Business Club at its first lunch meeting.

From accessing government grants, achieving carbon neutral or digital marketing support, Andrew Raby from the Hub outlined the broad range of help available for any business whether established or a start-up.

Mr Raby encouraged businesses to contact them with any queries — no matter how specific.  There was a lively discussion at the Stray Ferret Business Club following his talk with questions about the value of social media, to HR support and the end of European grants following Brexit.

When asked about evidence of impact the Growth Hub has on a business, Mr Raby discussed the results of a national evaluation of all Growth Hubs that took place from 2015 – 2020.  It reported “evident sustained growth” and found an impressive 17% increase in turnover for those companies who used Growth Hubs.

As well as providing specialist business advice, Mr Raby also highlighted the number of resources the Growth Hub has on offer to businesses.

The organisation can direct businesses to relevant funding sources, research institutions and local support schemes.

The discussion at the Business Club Lunch established the benefits all sectors can reap from the working with the Growth Hub.

Business Breakfast: Harrogate digital agency appoints commercial director

A Harrogate digital agency has announced the appointment of a new commercial director.

IDHL Group, which is based on Otley Road and specialises in e-commerce, digital PR and social media, has appointed Tom Rigden to the newly created role at the company.

Mr Rigden will be tasked with overseeing the company’s web division as part of the new position.

He said:

Harrogate business event to focus on hospitality support

Support for the hospitality sector in Harrogate will be discussed at a business event this week.

Organised by Philip Bolson of Mr B Hospitality in partnership with York & North Yorkshire Growth Hub, the event will hear from experts and politicians on how the industry can grow in the coming years.

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones and Helen Suckling, partnership and commercial manager at Destination Harrogate, will be among the speakers.

Mr Bolson will also address the discussion, as well as Danny Wild, principal of Harrogate College, and Ross Tatham, general manager of Goldsborough Hall.

There will also be an opportunity for attendees to network and develop contacts.

Business Breakfast: New fund for small businesses and start-ups in Harrogate district

Small businesses and start-ups in the Harrogate district that want to grow are being urged to sign up for a range of fully funded support under a programme launched by the York & North Yorkshire Growth Hub.

The hub, in partnership with Harrogate Borough Council, aims to stimulate economic development by helping businesses improve their competitiveness and productivity.

Available until March 2023,  the support includes mentoring and online and in-person seminars, around specialist topics such as HR, finance, sales and marketing, digital skills, and business planning.

The move follows the hub’s covid recovery-funded business support programme delivered last year.

Andrew Raby, manager of the hub, said:

“We know businesses of all types and sizes still face difficult challenges as they recover from the covid pandemic, and are battling issues including supply chain disruptions, further changes to the rules on imports and exports of goods to the EU, along with rising interest rates, inflation, and energy costs.

“We remain steadfast in supporting business in all sectors, whether a fledgling start-up or a growing business with premises and staff, in overcoming these prolonged tough trading times and set firm grounds to help businesses not just survive but thrive.”

Face-to-face events will be held at venues in Harrogate and will focus on rebuilding the economy across key sectors and inspiring growth, creativity, and innovation.

Harrogate hospital chair and manager shortlisted for awards

The chair of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and the trust’s business development, charity and volunteer manager have been shortlisted for a Helpforce Champions Award 2022, which recognises volunteering in the health and care sector.

Sarah Armstrong has been shortlisted for Health Leader Champion for Volunteering Award, whilst Sammy Lambert has been shortlisted in the Volunteer Manager of the Year category.

The awards are a chance to shine a light on those who give their time to help staff in the NHS and voluntary and community organisations, and support patients and their families and carers.

Mark Lever, chief executive of Helpforce, said:

2020 and 2021 have seen the NHS and all our healthcare services face one of the biggest challenges in their history, and we have seen volunteers step up in their thousands to help.

“This year, we have received a record number of entries for the Helpforce Champions Awards with so many brilliant examples of innovation, great practice, commitment, and real passion for patient care and support for staff across the health and care sector in the UK.”

The trust’s chair, Sarah Armstrong, said:

“It is a real privilege to have been shortlisted for the Health Leader Champion for Volunteering Award. I am passionate about the value of volunteering and the unique contribution volunteers can make within health and care settings..

“Within my role of chair of HDFT I have many responsibilities, but working with our volunteers and helping to develop a successful volunteer programme for our Trust is certainly one of the most rewarding.”

Sammy Lambert said:

“I am delighted that I was nominated for the prestigious Volunteer Manager of the Year award by our amazing team of nearly 500 volunteers and staff who work so hard every day to make such an amazing difference for our patients and service users”
