Four weeks of roadworks will begin in central Knaresborough this weekend as Northern Powergrid installs new electricity cables.
The work will take place on King James Road and York Place from Saturday, May 27.
With a trench set to be dug in the carriageway on King James Road, its junction with York Road will be closed until Monday, June 5.
Temporary three-way traffic lights will be installed, with a barrier around a temporary footpath, at the junction.
Work will also be carried out on the pavement between the pedestrian crossing and the footpath towards the cemetery.
From June 5, the junction will be reopened under four-way temporary lights until the expected completion date of Tuesday, June 20.
Northern Powergrid’s connections delivery project engineer Richard Appleyard said:
“Investment work is vital to connect customers to our network and although unavoidable, we do appreciate it can be very disruptive and every effort will be made to keep this disruption to a minimum.
“Our teams will endeavour to ensure access is maintained to properties in the area at all times and we thank local residents and the local community for their patience and co-operation whilst the connection work takes place.”
The company said it had notified nearby customers, including King James’s School and Knaresborough Swimming Pool, about the plans.
The new Knaresborough Leisure and Wellness Centre is currently under construction adjacent to the existing swimming pool, with work expected to continue until its opening date in November. The old pool is set to be closed in September for the final phase of the project.

Knaresborough Pure Gym confirms May opening date
Pure Gym has confirmed it will open in Knaresborough on May 19.
The gym, on the site of the former Lidl supermarket on York Road in Knaresborough, is already inviting locals to sign up for membership.
Pure Gym first revealed it was planning to take on the Knaresborough site last March. In November, it said it planned to be open by March this year but this has been pushed back by two months.
The new gym is set to offer 220 pieces of fitness equipment, certified personal trainers, cardio and weights area and a fitness studio.
The site is set to create nine new jobs and provide free car parking.
A spokesperson for Pure Gym, said:

It has an opening offer of £12.99 per month for the first six months, after which the price rises to £23.99.

Goldsborough gridlock brings ongoing misery to motorists
Queues of more than an hour have been reported once again this week due to temporary traffic lights on the edge of Knaresborough.
Three-way lights have been in place to allow Yorkshire Water to carry out work on the A59 near the junction with the A658, near Goldsborough.
The roadworks began affecting the busy commuter route at the beginning of October and have been regularly causing long tailbacks.
And while there has been some relief, with the lights being turned off at different periods throughout the day, it has inevitably caused traffic chaos.
This week drivers have reported queues all the way back to junction 47 of the A1(M) and beyond.
It has also had a major impact on pupils and teachers getting to and from Goldsborough CE Primary School.
With the roadworks due to last until November 27, many people have expressed frustration on social media.
@northyorkscc Could you ask your Highways Department what the point of the temporary traffic lights are at the Goldsborough/Knaresborough A59 roundabout please? The traffic is currently backed up to the A1 at Allerton Park yet there are no roadworks on the A59!!

One woman wrote on a Facebook group:
“Not helpful when it’s a guessing game every morning to see if they are on or not going to work in York daily.”
Another added:
“50 minutes it’s just taken me to get from Boroughbridge to King James School!”
The Stray Ferret contacted Yorkshire Water for comment but has not had a response.

Pure Gym set to open in Knaresborough in March
Pure Gym has revealed it plans to open in Knaresborough in March.
The no frills health club operates more than 300 gyms in the UK, including one in Harrogate, which opened in 2015.
The Stray Ferret revealed in March that it planned to open on the site of the former Lidl supermarket on Knaresborough’s York Road.
In an update today to the Stray Ferret, Pure Gym promised to bring “affordable, flexible fitness to Knaresborough” with an introductory offer of £12.99 a month.
Pure Gym in Harrogate, which opened in 2015.
The Lidl closed in 2018 and in February last year Homecare Pharmacy Services began providing covid clinics from a building in the car park until it moved in September last year to larger premises on Knaresborough’s Chain Lane.
Pure Gym now aims to have a gym up and running on the site alongside the main road in four months. It will open from 6am to 10pm daily.
A Pure Gym spokesperson said:
“Pure Gym is delighted to be bringing affordable, flexible fitness to Knaresborough.
“Scheduled to open in March 2023, the brand-new gym will be spread across about 11,500 square feet and will offer pin and free weights, group exercise classes, a range of machines and equipment, a large functional area and access to our PTs to help members achieve their fitness goals.

Traffic and Travel Alert: Harrogate district update

Harrogate
The long-term gas works on Crescent Road In Harrogate town centre are due to be paused this week.
Motorists are still unable to turn left at the Parliament Street junction and traffic coming the opposite way on Ripon Road is unable to turn right but by next week the restrictions should have ended.
Roadworks near the Harrogate Town ground on Wetherby Road in Harrogate are due to end today.
According to North Yorkshire County Council’s roadworks map, two sets of traffic lights will be active on Skipton Road, between the Empress roundabout and King’s Road.
The top of Woodfield Road is also closed to traffic leaving Skipton Road, though open to vehicles leaving Woodfield onto Skipton Road. Those works are scheduled to end today.
Kingsley Drive remains closed between Birstwith Road and Rydal Road until November 6. There are also temporary traffic lights on Kingsley Road while work continues to create an access road to the new housing development.
Knaresborough
Traffic lights on the A59 York Road near the junction with the A658 in Knaresborough are due to remain in place until November 11.
Yorkshire Water has installed four-way traffic lights as it lays a new water main for a housing development.
Kirkgate Road in central Knaresborough is closed today for works to the kerbs.
Several sets of two-way traffic lights are in place along the A6055 Boroughbridge Road between Knaresborough and Minskip.
Branton Lane in Great Ouseburn is closed until next Friday while Yorkshire Water lays a new main.
Ripon and Nidderdale
In Ripon, roadworks are due to conclude on Heckler Lane and New Road today.
Stumps Lane in Darley is closed for another week for a sewer to be connected.
Work to reconstruct the landslip-hit B6265 at Red Brae Bank, Bewerley, near Pateley Bridge, is ongoing.
The road is closed and a diversion is in place via Pateley Bridge, the B6451 Dacre, Menwith Hill Road, Duck Street and Greenhow Hill village. Temporary traffic lights will be in place during the remainder of the work.
Fell Beck Bridge remains closed for works until November 6, with a diversion in place via Burnt Yates and Summerbridge.
Trains and buses
Rail operator Northern is not reporting any significant problems on the line passing through Harrogate and Knaresborough this morning but the live departure and arrival board for Harrogate shows the 7.09am Northern service to York is currently running seven minutes late.
The Harrogate Bus Company is not currently reporting any cancellations or significant delays on its services. You can get updates here.
An early warning for you: there are some changes to bus timetables on the horizon, taking effect from Sunday, November 6. Most of these are minor, but in a more significant change, the 36 will no longer offer ‘neighbourhood journeys’ from Bilton and Jennyfield to Leeds.
The bus company said this is down to low passenger numbers. Passengers can still get tickets through to Leeds if they start their journeys on the 2A, 2B or 3.

Council rejects Flaxby eco-home plan for second time
Harrogate Borough Council has rejected plans for a development of eco-homes near Flaxby for a second time.
Holmes Planning Ltd submitted a planning application to the council for five homes off York Road in June this year.
The move followed the authority rejecting a plan for nine homes in January. The government also refused the proposal on appeal.
It would have seen houses built to environmental standards and included solar panels, air-source heat pumps and super-tight insulation. The houses were planned to be custom built.
In its latest application, Holmes Planning said it had addressed the concerns of the inspector including reducing the number of homes.
However, in a decision notice, the council said the proposal was “outside the development limits of any village or settlement”.
It added:
“The proposed five dwellings and associated paraphernalia would extend the built form into an undeveloped parcel of open agricultural land on the edge of Flaxby, which contributes to the rural character and landscape setting of the village.”

Knaresborough junction set for four weeks of roadworks
Drivers are warned to expect delays in Knaresborough for the next four weeks as roadworks start today.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place on the junction of Chain Lane, Wetherby Road and York Road.
North Yorkshire County Council is carrying out remedial work and replacing the kerbs at the junction.
Work will start today, May 3, and last for four weeks.

The move comes after the road recently had temporary traffic lights for two weeks while Northern Gas Networks carried out work on the junction.
The gas distributor for the north of England replaced metal pipes with newer plastic versions.
It said in a press release the work would “ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels such as hydrogen in the future”.
