Pateley Bridge Dramatic Society will be taking to the stage with their customary verve this autumn, as they are set to perform ‘The Weir’, the spellbinding, beautifully observed hit from the master of suspenseful realism, Conor McPherson.
Set in a rural pub in Carrick in the north-west of Ireland, ‘The Weir’ is naturalistic and familiar. The local men are swapping spooky stories to impress a young woman recently moved to the area from Dublin. As the drink flows and the stories become increasingly frightening, it’s clear that Valerie has something on her mind. She has a tale to tell that’ll stop them all dead in their tracks.
Behind the surface realism, however, this magnificent play has a haunting appeal. Conor McPherson writes: “Mystery is the philosophical underpinning of life. We don’t understand who we are or where we come from. A fear of the unknown is very exciting on stage.”
The performances will be held in the Pateley Bridge Playhouse on Saturday 15th November and then from Monday 17th to Friday 21st November starting at 7.30pm, all tickets costing £12. Tickets are on sale from 11th October onwards and bookings will be from the website www.pateleyplayhouse.co.uk
