Cash-strapped North Yorkshire Council is planning to raise money by selling alcohol at two of Harrogate’s premier cultural attractions.
The council has applied to itself for permission to serve alcohol at the Mercer Gallery and the Royal Pump Room Museum.
It is seeking permission to sell alcohol from 9.30am to midnight seven days of the week.
But Danielle Daglan, the council’s head of culture and archives, said it only planned to serve alcohol at specific events rather than on general sale.
She said:
By applying for licences to serve alcohol at both the Mercer Gallery and the Royal Pump Museum in Harrogate, we aim to increase the revenue venues such as these generate and further widen the experience offered to residents, visitors and businesses.
Such measures have proved popular in other venues in the county, such as at Skipton Town Hall.
If approved, alcohol will be served at specific events, such as private parties or cultural gatherings, when requested, and as part of the range of items in our gift shops. No permanent bar areas will be created.
Councillors will decide whether to accept the applications for premises licenses.
