Data protection in newsgathering

We gather information for the production of our news and other information services (“editorial information”). The editorial information is intended for publication and may incorporate extensive personal data about individuals, including sensitive personal data. As a responsible news organisation, we respect the rights of privacy of people who find themselves in the news and comply with the relevant data protection principles where we reasonably can.

News and features are published online and also distributed on social media channels such as Facebook and X. After initial publication, on the app or on the Stray Ferret website, we will keep copies in online archives. We will not delete or amend the archives unless the law requires us to do so.

What information do we collect outside newsgathering purposes?

We collect personal (your name) and contact (email address) information when you subscribe with us and create an account, complete a form on our website (i.e. enter a competition) or when you place an order with us for our products or services.

We also collect information when you voluntarily complete customer surveys, provide feedback, participate in competitions and when you email us or contact us by telephone.

Data security is of great importance to us. We take steps to protect your data by using data encryption on our websites and applications. Our websites are hosted in the UK and are monitored 24/7/365. The servers where they are stored includes firewall protection and secure monitoring software which generates alerts in the event of a hack attempt or the detection of malware.
