Four projects in the Harrogate district have received funding from the Mayor of North Yorkshire’s £10 million high street fund.

Labour mayor David Skaith launched the fund in February to help “boost the resilience” of local high streets.

A total of 18 projects across York and North Yorkshire have received funding.

However, the sums awarded to each one have not been revealed, neither were details of what each project will do.

Four of the 18 are in the Harrogate district, with two of those going to Harrogate Business Improvement District.

The schemes and beneficiaries are:

  • Data intelligence hub, Harrogate BID (joint application with York BID)
  • Vacant shops academy audit, Harrogate BID
  • Sustainable market towns, Totally Locally
  • Peculiar Masham, Mashamshire Community Office

York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority said the successful projects would receive targeted investment to support initiatives designed to increase footfall and community engagement.

Mr Skaith said:

High streets aren’t dying; they are just changing. I want to support these changes that are led by, and for the benefit of our communities.

The fantastic applications received in phase one of my Vibrant and Sustainable High Street Fund showcased fresh ideas to increase footfall and build stronger communities through events and improved spaces.

Funding for the projects has been allocated from the mayoral investment fund, which is worth £540 million over 30 years.

The high street fund spans four years. A second round of funding will be opened this year.

The Stray Ferret has approached the mayor's office and Harrogate BID for further details of the successful local applicants, including the sums awarded, but has not yet had a response.
