Harrogate’s old Post Office building has been converted into hotel flats.
The mail depot, which was located on Cambridge Road, was relocated to WHSmith in the Victoria Shopping Centre in May 2019, after 122 years of operation.
The move was met with mixed responses from the public, with former Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones expressing his concerns about a potential downgrade in the service.
Since its vacation, there have been multiple conversion plans, but none had previously made any progress.
But the building has finally been taken over and looks to bring a fresh lease of life to the centre.
Deuce Hotels, a Warrington-based hotel chain, opened its doors in the former Harrogate Post Office last Friday (May 16).
Established in 2022, the company also has locations in Warrington and Wakefield. The Warrington location was also renovated from an old Post Office building.
Its Harrogate location offers ‘luxury furnishings, dark glamour and regal sophistication throughout’ and is available in three different room types – cosy double apartment, classic double apartment and superior double apartment.
Each of the 23 apartments available have their own ensuites and kitchenettes.
The Stray Ferret today spoke with Zach Hardman, head of hotels at Deuce Hotels, who told us what the business thinks it can add to the area. He said:
We think it fits quite nicely in the area. Everything is quite nearby and it’s handy to get to places from where we are.
The traditional hotel market is much different since things like Airbnb emerged. So, we lend ourselves to both long and short-term stays. We’re at the high end of the market.
In response to our queries about the potential noise pollution from the McDonalds across the street, Mr Hardman said that the building was designed with thick walls and that there have been no problems so far.
The hotel is also receptionless as Mr Hardman said the company tries to “move with the times”.
He added that there are 24/7 call centres for support and people are on call in the area in the case of emergencies.
