A Harrogate school has said it is the most improved academy in North Yorkshire for attendance.
Harrogate High School said a report this week by the Department for Education showed its attendance had improved by 2.8% since March last year.
The school, which belongs to Northern Star Academies Trust, said this was better than any other school in the county.
An article published by the Education Policy Institute think tank this week said only 18% of students in Year 6 with attendance below 90% go on to get five GCSEs.
Children in Years 10 and 11 are twice as likely to get five GCSEs if they have 95% attendance than they are if they have 90%.
Deputy headteacher Jane Wearing said:
These statistics demonstrate that good attendance is a habit. At Harrogate High School we will keep working with our community to create this habit in all our students.
Everywhere we turn there are statistics supporting our message that good attendance creates good outcomes.
At Harrogate High School, those with 95% attendance or above gained positive progress scores of a third of a grade or more. Positive progress scores are government measures that show that a child has outperformed their expected grades.
Northern Star Academies Trust consists of 15 primary and secondary schools across North and West Yorkshire and parts of Lancashire.
Academy head Sukhraj Gill said:
Our attendance team meets with huge numbers of parents to support and improve attendance in collaboration with the child and family.
This is all part of our ongoing efforts to improve communication and streamline processes. The strategies that are now in place will ensure that our students at Harrogate High School have the best chance of a good education.
