The last remaining Secret Bakery in Harrogate has been put up for sale.
The artisan bakery, on Knaresborough Road, is listed for sale on the Rightbiz website.
The leasehold asking price is £135,000. The listing says the building is “only offered for sale due to our client wishing to now focus on other business opportunities”.
It adds that the shop takes around £30,000 a month and that “excellent profits are achieved” with a “huge scope to expand”.
Until February this year, the Secret Bakery was operating in three separate locations: on Knaresborough Road, inside Harrogate railway station on Station Parade, and Market Place in Knaresborough.
However, the Stray Ferret reported in February that bailiffs had repossessed the Station Parade site. We provided another update in April after the Knaresborough site came under new ownership and changed its name to 2B Coffee House.
Records from The Gazette and the Companies House website also said that the company had gone into liquidation, with liquidators appointed on November 26.
A resolution to wind up the company was approved the same day by director James Spencer.
A statement of affairs published on the Companies House website in December showed the company owed £43,138 to eight creditors, with energy companies accounting for a significant part of the sum.
Despite this, the Knaresborough Road site continued to trade.
In April, when we asked him how the remaining business was still operating, Mr Spencer said that although The Secret Bakery remained the trading name, the business was now run by a new company called Castle Café, of which he is a director.
He added that he was “determined to manage our last shop better”.
On February 11, however, Castle Café was issued a notice for a compulsory strike-off, according to the Companies House website. A day later, the notice was discontinued.
Further reports on the website state that Mr Spencer was terminated as director on July 24, with Jane Spencer taking over as the person with significant control over the company.
