A 20-year-old man died at the scene of a collision between York and Harrogate last night (March 3).
North Yorkshire Police today said officers were summoned at 10.35pm after a member of the public noticed a car had left the A59 between Moor Monkton and Green Hammerton.
Emergency services attended and discovered a Skoda Octavia in the embankment at the side of the road.
The force added the driver was certified dead at the scene. His family has been informed and they are receiving support from specially trained officers, police said.
A passenger in the car, a 19-year-old woman, remains in hospital in a serious condition.
The names and addresses of those involved have not been revealed.
The road was closed until 11.10am today to allow for collision investigation work and recovery to take place.
Police are now appealing for witnesses and information that may assist the investigation. Today’s statement also said:
