From historic coaching inns to tucked-away microbreweries, the area around Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and Boroughbridge is packed with characterful venues pouring well-kept pints in welcoming, atmospheric settings.
We’ve picked some standout spots where the beer is brewed with passion, the welcome is warm, and the surroundings are full of local flavour – perfect for your next pint-fuelled adventure.
One Eyed Rat beer garden
Tucked away in the historic city of Ripon, The One Eyed Rat is a cosy, family-run ale house that has been a local staple since 1996. With its low beams, rustic wood décor and flickering fireplace, the pub oozes traditional charm – and the beer selection is just as inviting.
Expect a rotating cast of six real ales on hand-pull, including brews from local favourites like Ossett Brewery, Saltaire Brewery, and Rooster’s Brewery, as well as occasional gems from further afield like Oakham Ales or Thornbridge Brewery. The team takes pride in their cellar work, ensuring each pint is perfectly kept.
Beyond beer, there’s a handpicked wine list and a continental lager selection. Outside, the spacious, leafy beer garden is a highlight, especially in summer. The One Eyed Rat is also famously dog-friendly, with water bowls and biscuits ready for your four-legged companion.
Whether you're after a post-walk pint, a fireside chat or a quiet spot to enjoy a book, this pub delivers authentic character in spades.
Stray Ferret loves the traditional vibe, the big beer garden and that it's dog-friendly.
The Track & Sleeper
Located on Platform 2 of Knaresborough railway station, The Track & Sleeper is Gorilla Brewing’s micropub and combines the charm of a classic railway pub with the buzz of a community hub. It is a national heritage award-winning restoration venue and serves award-winning ales. Stylish interiors meet a laid-back atmosphere, making it a top spot for locals, commuters and ale trail adventurers alike.
At the pumps alongside its own ale, expect two or three well-kept cask options from local and national breweries rotating regularly. There’s a strong commitment to flavourful, balanced ales – think easy-drinking pale ales. It also serves a good selection and variety of keg beers if you’re looking for a cooler choice on a hot day.
Alongside the beer, the pub hosts a regular programme of live music and pub quizzes. It’s the sort of place where you can drop in for a pint and end up staying for the evening.
Alternatively, perhaps sit in its external seating area where you can watch the world pass by on Platform 2.
You’re guaranteed a friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere here.
Stray Ferret loves the warm atmosphere, great tunes and easy-going service.

Rooster's Brewing Co
Located just outside central Harrogate in Hornbeam Park, Rooster’s Taproom is the brewery’s own showcase – and it delivers on every level. Inspired by the classic American taproom, with an industrial feel and a viewing window into the brewery, it’s a destination venue for anyone who is serious about beer.
With 16 taps (including eight hand-pulls), you’ll always find Rooster’s most popular beers, such as Yankee (one of the original, new-style, pale ales to be brewed in the UK), Yorkshire’s Best (gluten-free, modern classic bitter), and its flagship IPA Baby-Faced Assassin alongside seasonal specials covering all styles and tastes.
The venue is dog-friendly, wheelchair accessible, and families with under-10s are allowed until 7pm. It has a rotating selection of local street food vendors that add extra appeal – current midweek residents Tiro serve Sicilian classics Tues–Thurs, while the weekends see pop-up vendors offering street food from around the world you won't find anywhere else in Harrogate.
Events are a big part of the draw too. There's a weekly quiz, live music and monthly comedy, and there are more events in the pipeline, such as an illusionist night.
Stray Ferret loves the beer range, street food vibes and fun events calendar.
