The roadworks on Victoria Avenue in Harrogate that were due to be completed on Monday (July 14) will be in place for another two or three weeks, according to a senior council officer.
Much of the £700,000 programme of works has already been done since work started in March, but Karl Battersby, North Yorkshire Council’s corporate director for environment, has told the Stray Ferret that the project is now due for completion “by early August”.
He said:
The works at the Station Parade junction are almost complete, with resurfacing and traffic signals improvements continuing this month.
New paving on the north side of Victoria Avenue, between Princes Square and West Park, is expected to be completed this month.
There are also benches and lighting to install on the footpaths, which is programmed in July and will not require closures.
Works on realigning the West Park junction, decommissioning traffic signals, and improvements to kerbs and pavements are scheduled to begin in the next two weeks and are scheduled to finish in early August.
The road is fully open during the day with only phased footway closures, but night-time road closures will be required to carry out resurfacing of the carriageway.
Work on Victoria Avenue was due for completion on July 14.
Mr Battersby said the road closures were pencilled in for July 14 and July 28 to 30, from 7pm until midnight, but signs will be updated to reflect the confirmed dates and letters would be sent to local properties outlining any closures.
He added:
There will be temporary traffic signals on Station Parade until July 18 and West Park from July 14 to August 6. These dates are indicative and may change, and signs on site will once again reflect the final confirmed dates.
Temporary traffic signals will reflect the phasing of the permanent signals to create minimal impact.
The impact of these works on the wider roads network is also hoped to be kept to a minimum as any closures will be carried out at nighttime and signed diversions will be in place.
The roadworks started in March 2025.
The roadworks on Victoria Avenue, which is believed to be Harrogate's widest road, have been years in the planning, and some elements – such as cycle paths, realigning the zebra crossing outside the library, and prohibiting right turns from Belford Road – have been dropped.
In March, North Yorkshire Council told us what work would still be carried out:
• Traffic signals upgrades including replacing all existing infrastructure and adding new signalised crossing points at junctions with West Park and Station Parade.
• Building out footways at West Park junction to make prohibited straight-ahead movement from Beech Grove more difficult.
• A new bus-stop near the West Park United Reformed Church.
• Installation of new block paving at drive crossings to make a continuous footway.
• Installation of new tactile crossing at side roads.
• Relocation of ticket machines from centre of carriageway to edges.
• Installation of new decorative footway lighting.
• Improvements to existing zebra crossing.
• Repairs to flagged paving as required.
• Resurfacing to carriageway.
• New benches and bins.
• Changes to signage, lining and drainage as required.
