Starbeck Community Fund is to double the amount it gives away each year to £20,000.

The fund, which is managed by North Yorkshire Council, was established in 1992 with £300,000 generated from the development of the Morrisons supermarket.

The sum was set aside to improve recreation and community facilities.

The fund currently awards £10,000 a year but a 10-year review conducted by North Yorkshire councillors whose divisions fall in Starbeck and Starbeck Residents Association agreed to double the amount.

It means the small grants scheme for applicants aged 25 or under will award £400 each instead of £200 and the grants scheme for groups will award £2,000 each instead of £1,000.

Last year's successful applicants included Harrogate Neighbours, St Andrew’s Church and the 23rd Harrogate Scouts.

In a decision notice on its website, the council said:

Following discussions with the residents association on how the local community could best benefit from the funds, it has been recommended we draw down a maximum of £60,000 from the capital funds to offer larger grants for capital projects, this new opportunity would offer grants of up £20,000.
