Two men deny affray on Harrogate's Wetherby Road

The Stray Ferret spent the morning at Harrogate Magistrates Court on Thursday (June 26) and Friday (June 27).

We sat through hearings, which included cases of affray, drink-driving and assaults on emergency workers.

You can read reports on three cases below.

Two men have denied affray after an alleged incident on Wetherby Road in Harrogate.

Jack Rea, 21, and Jamie Richardson, 21, appeared in Harrogate Magistrates Court on Friday (June 27).

Mr Rea, of Headingley in Leeds, denied a charges of assault on a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm and affray on April 6, 2024.

His case was referred to York Crown Court for trial on August 4 this year.

Meanwhile, Mr Richardson, of Woodnook Drive in Leeds, also denied a charge of affray on the same date.

His case was sent to York Crown Court for trial on August 4.

Man admits drink-driving in Harrogate

A man has been banned from driving after drink-driving in Harrogate.

Ali Taleb, of Bootham Crescent in York, admitted driving under the influence of alcohol at a hearing at Harrogate Magistrates Court on Thursday (June 26).

Mel Ibbotson, prosecuting, told the court that Taleb, 60, was pulled over by police on Knaresborough Road in Harrogate at 9.40pm on June 11 this year.

The 60-year-old was ordered to undertake a roadside breathalyser test, where he recorded 55mg in 100ml of breath — the legal limit is 35.

Ismael Uddin, defending, said Taleb had no previous convictions and that he was “extremely sorry and remorseful”.

Magistrates banned Taleb from driving for 15 months.

He was also fined £120 and ordered to pay a victim’s surcharge of £48 and court costs of £85.

Man denies assaulting police officers in Harrogate

A man has denied assaulting two police officers in Harrogate.

Aidan Swindells, 31, of Byland Place, appeared before Harrogate Magistrates Court on Friday (June 27) where he spoke to confirm his name, address and enter a plea.

Mr Swindells denied two counts of assaulting an emergency worker on Byland Place on 29 December last year.

Magistrates referred the case for trial at York Crown Court on August 4.
