Knaresborough is to get a town ranger to undertake jobs such as litter picking and cleaning bus shelters.

Knaresborough Town Council, which is advertising the post, said it was responding to residents’ calls for the town to be looked after better.

In a post on social media, it added:

Many of the tasks we hope this role will undertake will be filling the gaps that are being missed and should have been fulfilled by the unitary authority North Yorkshire Council.

The ranger will be funded through the town precept — the amount added to council tax bills for services provided by the town council.

The precept will increase by 37% from £26.92 to £36.99 next month, as previously reported by the Stray Ferret here.

The town council, which advertised for the role this week, said the ranger will ‘tackle a range of odd jobs across the whole town aimed at maintaining and improving the town’s appearance’.

The successful candidate will be hired on a self-employed basis for five to 10 hours a week on a six-month trial.

Their duties will include cleaning signs and bus shelters, litter picking, weeding, trimming hedges and removing graffiti.

Councillor James Pickard, a Liberal Democrat, said:

We hope the appointment of a town ranger will be the first step towards tackling all the odd jobs that you often pass and think – ‘why does somebody not sort this?’ If you have a passion to see Knaresborough presented at its very best, and like what we do at the town council, then this job could be for you.

The Stray Ferret asked the town counil how much it had budgeted for the ranger but has not yet received a response.
