Knaresborough’s Boxing Day tug of war set for annual return

Two Knaresborough pubs are preparing to face-off once again over the River Nidd in one of the town’s most eagerly anticipated annual events.
The Boxing Day tug of war sees teams from the Half Moon and Mother Shipton’s Inn, which sit on opposite ends of Low Bridge, attempt to pull each other close to the water's edge.
No one falls in the river these days, but the bank holiday spectacle draws crowds of up to 1,000 people.
Mother Shipton’s won last year's tug of war, and whoever wins this year will proudly display the trophy inside the respective pub.
The Half Moon will have a charity bucket to raise money for Frank’s Fund, a charity set up by the Ashton family, whose 14-year-old son, Frank, died from Ewing sarcoma – a form of bone cancer.
The Knaresborough town crier will keep the crowds informed throughout the heats.
The best-of-three men's and women's pulls start at midday. People are encouraged to arrive early to ensure a good viewing spot.
Half Moon landlord Tom Clarkson told the Stray Ferret this year’s tug of war will be the same as usual, with both pubs open for drinks. The Half Moon will open from 11am.
He added:
It’s just a bit of fun. We need to do our best to raise as much money for Frank’s Fund as possible. It’s something to enjoy and just one of Knaresborough’s crazy traditions.
