Kirkby Malzeard tractor crash survivor to appear on TV appeal this weekend
The survivor of a horrific tractor crash near Harrogate will appear in a TV appeal on Sunday (April 27) to help people with life changing injuries.
On January 27, 2021, then-19-year-old Lucie Maguire was hit by a tractor near Ripley and dragged along the road under its 10-tonne trailer.
She had been trying to help her mum, whose car had broken down and filled with smoke, when she was hit by the oncoming vehicle.
In a previous interview with the Stray Ferret, Lucie, from Kirkby Malzeard, said she was stuck under the tractor, “going round continuously with the wheels until it spat me out further down the road”.
She was left with life changing injuries, including a full amputation of her right leg and pelvis, a broken back, and internal damage to key organs such as the bladder. Her injuries were compared to those of a bomb-blast victim.
Lucie, who is now 23, will appear alongside three other major trauma survivors, including presenter JJ Chalmers, on the BBC Lifeline charity appeal.
They were all helped by the charity Day One Trauma Support, which helps people affected by major trauma rebuild their lives.
Mr Chalmers, a former Royal Marine Commando and Strictly Come Dancing contestant, suffered life changing injuries after an explosion in Afghanistan.
Day One Trauma Support’s BBC Lifeline Appeal will air on Sunday at 2.15pm on BBC One.
The nine-minute film will be presented by Mr Chalmers and will introduce viewers to the stories of three major trauma survivors, including Lucie.
It will cover how the survivors have overcome their catastrophic injuries with help of Day One Trauma Support.
The other two stories will feature Paul Price, 57, who was injured in the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, and nine-year-old Lily-Mae West, who broke 15 bones in her skull in a zorbing accident.
Day One’s BBC Lifeline Appeal will be the first time the charity’s work has been shown on national TV.
The appeal will be available to watch for three weeks via the BBC website and iPlayer at www.bbc.co.uk/lifeline.
