Plans to install 90 solar panels on the roof of a council-owned leisure centre in Pateley Bridge have been submitted.

North Yorkshire Council, which owns the site, seeks approval from itself to install pitched solar panels at Pateley Bridge Leisure and Wellness Hub.

The plans refer to the site as Nidderdale Recreation Centre.

The application provides little detail on the project, so the Stray Ferret asked the authority if it was part of a wider sustainability scheme.

The council’s executive member for leisure, Councillor Simon Myers, said swimming pools use a lot of energy and, with rising costs, “everything that can be done to reduce bills is welcomed”.

Cllr Myers added:

The proposals for the solar panels, which are due to be funded through the government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, are set to allow us to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and support our approach to reach net zero while ensuring that we continue to offer quality and sustainable leisure facilities for our communities.

The scheme, which was renewed last September by the Labour government, provides grants to reduce emissions from public sector buildings by 75% by 2037.

The Stray Ferret also asked the council how much funding it expects to receive to cover the costs of the solar panels. We are awaiting a figure.

The leisure centre, which is next to Nidderdale High School, has a swimming pool, a gym, squash courts and a sports hall.
