A gym in Ripon has been granted planning permission to extend its opening hours.

CrossFit Ripon applied to extend its hours in February by a total of 8.5 hours across the week, with the intention of opening earlier to allow for extra morning classes.

The gym's new operating hours will be:

  • Monday - Thursday: 6am - 8pm
  • Friday: 6am - 8pm
  • Saturday: 8am - 8pm
  • Sunday: 8am - 2pm

CrossFit was previously permitted to open at 6.30am on weekdays. It has also extended its evening hours on Fridays and both morning and evening hours on Sundays.

Mick and Sarah Meegan opened the gym in 2023 to serve the local CrossFit community. The only other local CrossFit gym at the time was at Hornbeam Park in Harrogate.

The gym’s planning application in February stated 'growing demand' for its services was a primary reason for wanting to extend its hours.

The application received 41 letters of support from the public, which said opening longer would have a positive impact on the community as well as the local economy.

Ripon City Council, which was the sole objector, said the extended hours could impact on nearby residential areas.

North Yorkshire Council decided there would be no substantial negative impacts and therefore granted permission for it to proceed.

In a statement, Mr Meegan said:

This is a great step forward for us and our community, allowing us to offer more flexibility and accessibility to our members and the wider community.

The main reasons behind this approval include:

• Increased demand – Many of our members and Ripon’s residents have expressed the need for earlier and later training options to fit around work and family commitments.

• Community benefit – Extended hours give more people the opportunity to prioritise their health and fitness, contributing to overall wellbeing.

• Growth and accessibility – This will allow us to take on more members and offer more classes throughout the week and weekends, making fitness more accessible to the community and beyond. It also keeps us competitive with other similar businesses offering flexible hours.
