A stunning Georgian house in central Ripon that was once home to world-famous author Lewis Carroll is up for sale for £1.6 million.
The Rev Charles Dodgson, whose books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking-Glass were published respectively in 1865 and 1871 under his pen name, lived at The Old Hall in High Saint Agnesgate for three months of the year between 1852 and 1858, when his father, who was also named Charles, was the Archdeacon of Richmond and a canon in residence at the nearby Ripon Cathedral.
It is believed that carvings in the cathedral provided the inspiration for some of the characters in Lewis Carroll’s books.
Estate agents Savills, who are marketing the property, describe it as "an exquisite Grade II* Listed Georgian masterpiece in the centre of Ripon".
They add:
The Old Hall stands as one of Ripon's most distinguished residences, a rare gem of early 18th-century Georgian elegance, discreetly nestled in the heart of the city.
This Grade II* listed town house, imbued with profound architectural and historical significance, once served as the canon's residence up from 1841 to 1858, hosting the illustrious Rev Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), whose poetic musings were inspired within these very walls.
The interiors are a testament to refined craftsmanship, boasting an extraordinary 1738 staircase hall adorned with masterful plasterwork of unmatched sophistication.
