Harrogate Magistrates Court.

A Boroughbridge man appeared at Harrogate Magistrates Court today (April 24) charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

Stewart McMillan, of Willow Grove, pleaded guilty to the offence.

Mel Ibbotson, prosecuting, told the court police were asked to attend an address in Langthorpe shortly after midnight on April 6 this year.

The court heard a male – McMillan – was at the address and “banging on walls” at the time.

Police went to the scene, where the defendant was “extremely intoxicated”, and McMillan was offered a lift home.

Ms Ibbotson said his behaviour continued and he was eventually arrested.

The 42-year-old defendant spent around 10 hours in custody.

‘I don’t really remember it’

McMillan, who was not legally represented in court, told the magistrates he had been walking home from a wedding on the night of the offence.

“I was drunk; I had been drinking champagne and prosecco”, he said.

McMillan claimed he does not remember the incident, but admits he is guilty.

“All I remember is waking up in custody the next morning”, he added.

The magistrates fined McMillan £40. He was also ordered to pay a £16 surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs.
