A primary school between Ripon and Harrogate has maintained the standards that led to it being assesed as 'outstanding', according to Ofsted.

Burton Leonard Church of England Primary School received the highest possible grading of 'outstanding' at its last full inspection in 2019.

Its most recent visit in October was an ungraded inspection to see if it had maintained previous standards.

Government inspectors praised its "effective action to maintain standards" and described it as a “happy school where pupils are well cared for".

Inspectors said staff have high expectations of pupils’ behaviour and teachers have good subject knowledge.

The report also highlighted the warm relationships between pupils and staff. It added that “pupils behave well and have positive attitudes to learning".

Inspectors noted that “the vast majority of parents and carers are overwhelmingly positive about the school.”

However, they said staff are sometimes unsure about how best to support pupils with special educational needs and disabilities in lessons and that on occasion, staff do too much for pupils.

The report added:

After some instability and a decline in standards, leadership capacity has been strengthened and there is a shared purpose and vision. Staff feel well supported. They are proud to work at the school.

The school has 89 pupils aged 5 to 11 on its roll, making it a smaller than average primary school.

Headteacher Rebecca Wolfe said:

We are delighted with the outcome of our recent inspection. We are hugely proud of our staff team for their energy, commitment and ongoing dedication. We would like to thank our governors, parents and community for their overwhelming support; and our wonderful pupils for making Burton Leonard the school that it is.
