Young artists from Harrogate have beaten off hundreds of entries in a Rotary Club competition.

Ashville students Breanne Loken and Mille Murgatroyd, and Varsha Parthian from Rossett Acre, impressed with their interpretations of the theme ‘wonderful water’.

The competition, run for the first time by the Rotary Club of Harrogate, was part of a nationwide Young Artist Competiton by Rotary UK. It was judged by Harrogate gallery owner Richard McTague and Nidderdale artist Sarah Garforth.

Mervyn Darby, a member of Harrogate Rotary’s Youth Committee who took the lead on the local competition, said:

The theme inspired some fabulous art with the judges awarding ten Highly Commended Certificates as well as the three winners, just emphasising the wealth of imagination and creativity produced by the young artists.

Congratulations to everyone who submitted an artwork, and especially to our winners - a great achievement.

Around 200 entries were received from pupils at Rossett, Ashville, Harrogate Grammar, St Aidan’s, St John Fisher, Harrogate High and the Ladies College, while primary schools Rossett Acre and Coppice Valley also took part.

The three Harrogate winners each received £50, with £100 going to their schools. They were also put forward to a district competition, with Varsha and Breanne being selected for the national finals in London in April.
