Ripon motorcycle enthusiasts Paul and Inga Neale had a shock awakening this morning when flames engulfed their garden shed and destroyed two valuable Ducati superbikes.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene at the couple's home on the Low Mill estate, after Mr Neale and neighbours raised the alarm shortly after 2am.

He told the Stray Ferret

Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but there was no saving the two bikes that had been in the shed and it was a shocking sight.

We went to bed as usual and then in the early hours we heard three or four bangs and when I got into the garden more than half of the shed was alight and we were relieved to see the blue flashing lights approaching.

The firefighters had the flames under control within half an hour and they stayed for some time afterwards to damp down and carry out an inspection.

Mr Neale estimates that the two superbikes that were destroyed - a Ducati ST3s and a Ducati Monster 600 - were worth a total of £6,500, but he pointed out:

In the grand scheme of things they are just stuff and stuff can be replaced.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the fire was believed to be accidental in its incident report, which said:

Once the fire was extinguished, crews continued to dampen down hotspots whilst carrying out an inspection using the thermal imaging camera in preparation for the arrival of our fire investigation officer.

After an investigation, it was believed the cause of the fire was accidental. The incident was left in the hands of the owner.
