Harrogate district top of North Yorkshire Christmas drink driving arrests
New drink driving figures show the Harrogate district had more drink driving arrests than anywhere else in North Yorkshire over the Christmas period.
North Yorkshire Police today released the figures for its annual Christmas drink and drug drive campaign, which ran throughout December.
It revealed the number of arrests increased for the second year running. The force said in a statement it made 151 arrests — 11% up on last year.
Of those arrested, 102 people were over the legal limit for alcohol, and 42 were arrested for drug use.
Two people were arrested for drink and drug usage and 17 people for failing to provide a specimen at roadside.
Men accounted for 77% of arrests; the figure for women was 23%. A total of 43% of those arrested have been charged and are due to appear at court or have already appeared over recent weeks.
The rest have been released on bail or under investigation to allow for further work to take place.
Harrogate district tops list
The Harrogate district and York accounted for 46% of all arrests. Of those, 35 were made in Harrogate and 34 were made in York.
The remaining figures are as follows:
Scarborough – 20
Hambleton – 17
Rydale – 14
Richmond – 11
Selby – 11
Craven – 9
A total of 38 arrests were made directly as a result of a collision. This figure has doubled in the past two years.
This is the second year in succession the number of arrests has increased.
Chief inspector Tom Ibbetson said:
Although the campaign has drawn to a close for another year, our work is ongoing all year round to tackle drink and drug driving. We will be out in force every day this year to target drivers who put themselves and others at risk in this way.
