Coach Gyms in Harrogate has been acquired by neighbouring Surge Padel.
The two businesses on Hornbeam Park are both owned by Dubai-based property firm Select Group.
Coach Gyms Ltd failed to find a buyer for its other gyms in Leeds and London. Both gyms have closed and the company is being wound up.
Surge Padel has six padel courts at Hornbeam Park. Manager Rich Wingfield said it had acquired the Coach brand as part of the deal that saw it take control of the Harrogate gym.
Mr Wingfield added:
There will be no real change from the staff and customers’ point of view. It’s an incredibly successful site for us and it’s all looking very positive.
He added there had been "some disruption" to suppliers as a result of the change and it was too early to say what long-term changes might take place.
Former Harrogate resident Stuart Perrin opened Coach Gyms in Leeds in 2020. The Harrogate site followed in January 2022, offering monthly membership for less than £20, and the company also opened a site in Holborn in London.
Speaking to the Stray Ferret in 2023, Mr Perrin said there was “a huge gap in the middle for people wanting quality but without the high prices” associated with some gym membership.
Mr Perrin today told the Stray Ferret he sold his share in the business last year.
Insolvency specialist RSM was appointed to wind-up Coach Gyms Ltd at a meeting in Leeds on January 6.
A notice by chair Stephen Allsop, posted on public records journal The Gazette, said a special resolution was passed at the meeting saying “the company cannot, by reason of its liabilities, continue its business” and would be wound up voluntarily.
The Stray Ferret contacted RSM for further details of the winding-up but has not had a response.
