Harrogate Town have appointed a new club captain today (May 29).
Thirty-four-year-old defender Warren Burrell will lead the side out in the 2025/26 season. It comes as part of a new two-year deal signed with the club.
Previous skipper Josh Falkingham retired from professional football at the end of the season.
Burrell is a versatile defender who made 33 appearances for Town last season, appearing in all areas of the back line.
The Harrogate number six was an obvious captain candidate for Simon Weaver – he has spent 11 years at the club and has made 396 appearances, the third highest in the squad.
He led the side out on numerous occasions in the lengthy absence of Falkingham, who only featured 12 times for the Sulphurites last season.
Speaking after signing his new contract, Burrell said:
I’m delighted, the club means a lot to me, I’ve been here a long time now and I’m glad that journey is continuing.
To be captain is a proud day for myself and my family, it means a lot to me wearing the armband and I hope I can do it justice because Falks was a great captain and a great leader.
We’re all proud of where Harrogate have got to, but now it’s about challenging ourselves to do more and bringing more proud days to the club.
There’s a lot of players in this squad who are leaders without the armband and together singing off the same hymn sheet we can push the club forward.
