Plans have been submitted to introduce new handrails at Wetherspoons in Harrogate.
The proposal, which has been submitted to North Yorkshire Council by JD Wetherspoon PLC, would see the additional handrails implemented on the staircase at the grade two listed building.
The company said the plan was designed to “ensure visitor and patron safety” at the histroic Winter Gardens site on Parliament Street.
As part of the proposal, new handrails will be implemented to the stairs and a new balustrade will be installed on the balconies.
Wetherspoons said the work was essential to ensure the staircase is safe and meets the requirements stipulated by building regulations.
In a planning statement issued to the council, the company said:
It is clear that the current and future use of this building provides a huge benefit to the community through its historic importance.
Due consideration has been given to the special architectural and historic importance of this building.
The introduction of compliant guarding will ensure both the long-term safety of the public and its sustainability, allowing the building to function in a modern and safe manner.
North Yorkshire Council will make a decision on the plan at a later date.
